John F. Murphy Jr. (74), originally from Somerville and a long-term resident of Marshfield, passed away on May 28, 2023. John is survived by his wife, Mary and their three children.  Matthew and his wife Carrie Murphy and two children Brenna and Dylan Murphy. Christopher and his wife Elizabeth and two children Lauren and Luke Murphy. Patrice and her daughter, Margaret "Daisy" Murphy. His siblings, Judy Beaton, Kevin (Deceased), Brian, James, Mark, Dennis, William, Maureen, Stephen, and David Murphy. He was the son of late Margaret and John F. Murphy, Sr.

John was always full of mischief growing up in Somerville with his brother and sisters and had many stories to share with his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted family man who worked to provide for his wife and kids, always with a smile. John was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for over forty years in Quincy. It was John's love for the beach that drew him to Marshfield, and he lived for his laid-back weekends on the beach. Whether it was a long weekend road trips to the Cape, or a winter trip to Myrtle Beach he always made time to enjoy the sun and sand.

When his kids were growing up, John was always the first to coach the sport, drive the neighborhood, or root his kids on from the sideline. John had a passion for sports and competing and would play in golf leagues and eventually transitioning to bowling leagues and enjoyed the people and comradery. As he grew older his perfect afternoon was in his backyard, catching some sun, spotting his birds, and listening to his Red Sox on the radio.  John favorite day was Sundays when he could attend Mass and call his mother when she was alive.  In his later years, John enjoyed visits from the grandkids and hearing how their school and sports were going.

He will be deeply missed but will always be in the hearts of his wife, his children, and grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church, 40 Canal Street in Marshfield, followed by interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
