Obituary

With heartfelt sorrow, and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we share the passing of John Clinton Murray, who left us peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by the love of his family. John faced a series of health challenges with quiet strength, optimism, and grace, inspiring those around him until the very end.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John—known affectionately to many as Clint—was the eldest son of Jack Charles and Ruth (Blanchard) Murray. He grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in a lively household with six younger brothers, an experience that shaped his lifelong sense of patience, responsibility, and devotion to family. John attended Glen Ridge High School, New York University, and Prince George’s Community College before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, from which he received an honorable discharge.

John spent more than 30 years working in telecommunications, beginning his career with New Jersey Bell as a Lineman, and later transferring to C&P Telephone Company in Maryland as a Central Office Technician and eventually retiring from Bell Atlantic as a Manager and Technical Writer. He took pride in his work and was respected for his curiosity, adaptability, and thoughtful approach in an ever changing field.

Outside of work, John embraced life with enthusiasm and heart. He especially cherished time spent outdoors and the close bond he shared with his son, Jeffrey. Through the Boy Scouts and Sea Explorer Scouts, John and Jeff shared countless adventures—many of them on the water—where John passed along not just sailing skills, but patience, confidence, and a lasting love of exploration.

Art was one of John’s great joys. A gifted and devoted artist, he expressed himself through Scrimshaw etching, printmaking, plein air, oil painting, acrylics, and detailed graphite drawings. His home reflected a life of creativity and curiosity. John served as President of both the Foundry Street Gallery in Columbia, Maryland, and MD Printmakers, Inc., and his work earned numerous awards over the years. In Delaware, John taught art classes to the underserved communities in Sussex County for the Rehoboth Art League He continued creating art right up until his passing, finding peace and fulfillment in the act of making art.

John also loved staying connected to people. He had a wonderful singing voice and brought warmth and laughter to every karaoke night he joined. Ever curious and engaged, he co-created an on-air radio station with fellow radio and television personalities, sharing stories, humor, and lively conversation with listeners. John narrated “Dancing on a Volcano”, a documentary about the life of Nadja Marino, a Fashion Illustrator. Which was part of the Sarasota, FL Film Festival in 2012. Later in life, he found deep meaning reading to the blind in Marshfield, a role that beautifully reflected his generous and compassionate spirit.

John is survived by his beloved son Jeffrey C. Murray and daughter in law Tiffany, of Arundel, Maine, and by his much loved grandchildren Olivia, Tyler, Finn, Weston, and Charlotte, who brought enormous pride and joy to his life. He is also survived by his six brothers: Craig (Virginia) of Marshfield; David (Margaret) of Westford; Fred (Jayne) of Marshfield; Doug, of Ireland; Steve (Georgia) of Green Harbor; and Jeff (Sally) of Duxbury, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews who were dear to him. John was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Ruth Murray.

At his core, John was a gentle soul—known for his patience, thoughtfulness, and quiet generosity. His faith, his family, and the many friendships he nurtured were the anchors of his life. To have known John was a gift, and his kindness, creativity, and steady presence is deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Marshfield. Following the service, he will be laid to rest with military honors at the Massachusetts National Veteran's Cemetery.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth for their compassionate care during John’s final weeks.
