Obituary

John "Jack" Michael Quinlan, 87, of Duxbury, MA, Singer Island, FL and Worcester, MA passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023 after a lengthy illness.  He was with his loving wife, Loretta (Messier) to whom he was devoted for over 66 years and his family.

Born in Worcester, MA, the son of Edward and Emma (Leahy) Quinlan, Jack was predeceased by his brother Edward Quinlan, Jr.  He was the son of a Worcester Fireman (Engine 1 Greendale), a graduate of North High School, Clark University, and Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.  Jack dedicated much of his professional career to State Mutual Life Assurance (The Hanover Insurance Company). He started his business career at State Mutual in the data processing department while attending Clark University nights for twelve years to earn a bachelor's degree.  He retired from State Mutual as Senior Vice President Individual Insurance.  Jack finished his business career in Boston as President and Chief Executive Officer of Massachusetts Casualty Insurance Company. He also served numerous charities and on Boards including Assumption College.

As a former member of Worcester Country Club and Marshfield Country Club, Jack was an avid golfer.  As an active boater and member of the Plymouth Yacht Club, Jack enjoyed spending time with friends, family and other yachters cruising Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, and Boston.  His last vessel "LoJack" was known and visited by many at Brewers Marina in Plymouth MA. When in Florida, Jack enjoyed golf, tennis and his many friends at his home at the Tiara on Singer Island.

Jack's greatest pleasure was being at the helm of the Quinlan family.  He leaves three generations of his 'crew' grateful for his love and guidance including: His daughter, Brenda Quinlan Goodell, and her family, Molly Goodell MacLennan and Will MacLennan of Hanson, MA and their children Lily, Liam and Logan, and Grace Goodell of Duxbury; Michael Quinlan and his wife Jennifer (Carbone) also of Duxbury, and their children Emily and Colin; and Kevin Quinlan of Worcester and his children, Jack and Caroline.  Jack also leaves his nephew, Mark Quinlan and his wife Sandra of Worcester and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

There will be a celebration of Jack's life, well lived, on Sunday, January 7th from 3:00-6:00pm at the Plymouth Yacht Club, Plymouth MA.  The wake and burial will be private.
