Obituary

John J. Toomey, of Marshfield passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on January 25, 2021 at the age of 76. He was the beloved husband to Cynthia (Paull) Toomey; loving father of Jonathan P. Toomey and his wife Erin of Marshfield and Kristen Shepherd and her husband Joshua of Scituate; and cherished grandfather of Isla and Matthew Toomey and Mia and Austin Shepherd. Son of the late John E. and Elizabeth (Dunleavy) Toomey, he was the dear brother of Richard Toomey and his late wife, Lori of Whitman, Mary Loughnane and her husband John of Melrose, Ann Lahiff and her husband Michael of Melrose, and the late Robert Toomey. John also leaves his cousin Robert Dunleavy and his wife Kay of Virginia, his late Brother In Law Michael Paull of Whitman and his Wife Cecilia, Brother In Law Elliot Paull and his wife, Sally of Seattle, WA, his best long time friends William and Barbara Sullivan of Naples, FL and many nieces and nephews, and close to a million friends.

John spent his pre-marriage days as an avid skier and sailing the boat he had earnestly saved up for. His passion for sports led him to have season Patriots tickets which also led him to meet the love of his life, Cindy. It then took John and his patented pick up move to fall down a flight of stairs to really woo Cindy, and for whatever reason it worked- 47 years of marriage is proof of that.

The fun and games only got better when he became a father. His son Jonathan was born to keep him on his toes, and Jonathan didn't disappoint. John was always so excited to get involved with his son any way he could. As a long time Marshfield little league coach and equipment manager, John gained his popularity. (You may have even been lucky enough to find a baseball labeled "Toomey" in the woods around the town's baseball fields. If you haven't found one yet, don't worry there's still plenty out there)!

Just when John thought one child was good enough to keep him on his toes, he was blessed with a daughter, Kristen. Kristen not only inherited his beautiful blue eyes and his kind gentle demeanor, but she also got his slightly obsessive problem with holding onto unnecessary items for "just in case" purposes.

After being in the printing business for 35+ years, he finally retired and got his dream job as an assistant Harbor Master. His passion with being on the water since he was a young boy, made him feel at home.

When John wasn't busy enjoying the benefits of being a snowbird down in Naples FL, playing golf or enjoying sundowners on the veranda, he could be found reading the paper by the high wall or in his favorite TV chair surrounded by all 14 different remotes. (Labeled Toomey, just kidding...but maybe not). He always looked forward to his favorite holiday - St. Patrick's Day where he appreciated Corned Beef and Hash, good company and some great Irish music!

John made friends wherever he went. He was quiet, easy going, kind and generous. He would give you the shirt off his back or the last 5 dollars in his pocket. He loved his town and his job. John was incredibly proud- proud to be an Irish Bostonian, proud of his faith, his wife, his kids and his grandkids. Being a Grandfather was his purpose. He loved his Grand babies so much! His smile couldn't get any bigger when it came to those 4 grandkids. They are going to miss him the most.

John blessed the world and all those who knew him. His enormous heart that was filled with love, respect, support, generosity and loyalty will live on forever! He will be greatly missed by all, especially his family, who loved him dearly.

We are sure he's up there relaxing, sipping on a Manhattan with a stogie!
