Karen (Redford) Smethurst, 74, of Marshfield, MA, formerly of Pembroke, MA, passed away on April 6, 2020 after a brave and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born August 16, 1945, in Boston, MA, the daughter of Elineor and Charlie Redford, of Concord, MA and loving wife of John Smethurst for 53 years.
Karen attended Concord-Carlisle High School and was involved in her church and the choir. Many high school friends still fondly remember her singing "Oh Holy Night," a cappella, on Christmas Eve. Karen graduated from the University of Lowell with a degree in elementary education.
Karen spread laughter and kindness wherever she went. Her perpetual smile and genuine ability to put everyone at ease with her calm and quiet personality were just some of her unique qualities. She was naturally artistic, whether it was through music, painting, home decorating, or bird carving.
Karen was beloved in the Pembroke and Marshfield communities. Karen was a teacher in her early career and loved all her students that she taught while teaching in the Pembroke, MA elementary school district, as well as Director at Community Nursey Kindergarten (CNK) in Pembroke. She also sang in the church choir at First Church in Pembroke. Later in her career, she sold real estate and helped many families create roots in their own communities. She was very active in the YWCA in Marshfield and the Marshfield Senior Center where she spent time with friends, took classes, and organized charitable events.
Karen was a loving Mother to her three daughters and their spouses Laura Campbell and Colin Campbell of Pembroke, Lynda Smethurst and Monika Cone of Hingham, Mhari Snell and Jay Snell of Halifax. Karen was a beloved Mimi to Melissa, Spencer and Erica Campbell, and Alec, Carson, Scott and Colton Snell. Karen is survived by her brother Jay Redford, and many nieces and nephews. She had a love for animals and leaves several grand "fur babies" who loved their visits from Mimi.
With the worldwide pandemic, there are no visiting hours. Private burial will take place at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA with immediate family.
