Obituary

Kevin Joseph Greer, of Marshfield, MA, born in Jamaica Plain in 1964, son of James and Pauline (MacDonald) Greer, passed away unexpectedly on January 18, 2016 at the young age of 51. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Jacquelyn (Sopchak) Greer, his children Courtney, Alex, and K.J., his parents James and Pauline, his brother James and his wife Theresa of Plymouth, his sister Kathy and her husband Jack of Bridgewater, his brother Ken and his wife Abby, his nieces and nephews that meant the world to him, his in-laws Richard and Donna Alger of Earlville, NY, his brother and sister in-law Thomas and Terry Sopchak, his brother in-law Pete Sopchak, his son in-law Ben Hetzel, and granddaughter Emilia Hetzel. Kevin was a graduate of Hull High School. Upon completion of high school he attended Westfield State University, graduating in 1986 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Kevin was an exceptional athlete and was an All New England pitcher in his sophomore year 1984. Upon graduation from college, Kevin became a teacher at Saint Mary's Parish School in Dorchester. In 1988, Kevin began his professional career with a job at the Hatherly Elementary School in Scituate. Later when Jenkins Elementary School opened, Kevin transferred there where he remained employed. Kevin, or "Coach Greer", taught Physical Education and is known for his exciting made up games, such as "messy backyard". He was also well known, admired and respected as the head coach for the Scituate High School varsity baseball team, which he coached for 18 years, and more recently as the Assistant Coach for Marshfield High School Varsity baseball team. Less well known was his musical and acting talents. Kevin also played the trumpet and acted in community theatre with the Genesians Players in Weymouth. Kevin was an avid sports fan and a diehard Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was highly competitive no matter if he was playing corn hole in the backyard or coaching a State Championship baseball game. Although Kevin grew up enjoying the ocean and beaches here in Massachusetts, he became passionate about the Adirondacks in upstate New York later in life. He loved to go camping with his family and friends and spending time there every summer. Kevin was a committed family man who enjoyed and supported his family in their many activities. He was especially fond of supporting his son K.J.'s activities in football, karate, and school. He enjoyed swimming in the family pool in the backyard and playing water sports with everyone. Kevin was also a servant to the Lord and a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Scituate. Kevin was well known for his infectious positive attitude. His glass was always half full no matter what happened to him in life. He had a positive, upbeat sense of humor that forced everyone who met him to look at their troubles in life in a different way. Nothing was ever insurmountable. He was highly moral and lived by a very high set of standards. He made friends out of strangers quickly. Kevin was an angel sent from God. He effected the lives of thousands of people and those who knew him were blessed for it. The impact he had, the lessons he taught, and the laughter he brought to everyone's lives is beyond measure. Kevin, we miss you and love you more than words can convey. May the peace of the Lord be with you now and always.
