Marguerite (Farrenkopf) Cluff of Marshfield, formerly of Hyde Park, passed away at the Pat Roche Hospice Center in Hingham on May 5, 2017, at age 101, only four months short of her 102 nd birthday. Beloved by her large, extended family, Marguerite was a special person who never forgot a birthday or anniversary and regularly sent greeting cards to everyone she knew.
Marguerite and her siblings had a difficult life growing up during the Depression in Boston. Her family moved frequently and she and her sisters, after losing their mother at a young age, spent much of their youth in foster care and under the watchful eyes of the Catholic nuns at the Home for German Children in Boston. She went to a different high school every year before graduating from St. Clement in Medford. Despite her difficult youth, Marguerite was a strong, kind, independent woman who privately supported many less fortunate than herself, as well as countless charities, including Globe Santa, a particular favorite, having been a Globe Santa child herself.
Marguerite met her husband Joseph at a roller rink in Boston while on an outing with her sister. They raised their family on the third floor of a triple decker in the tight knit neighborhood of St. Ann's Parish, Dorchester, before building a home in Hyde Park where the bus stopped just outside her door, giving easy access to downtown Boston. Being a true city girl, she never learned to drive! For many years she did keypunching work for Copley Business Service. She and Joe enjoyed traveling in their retirement, especially to Florida with friends.
Seven years ago Marguerite was one of the first residents to move into the Village at Proprietor's Green in Marshfield. She was thrilled to find a childhood classmate was her new neighbor. Though she missed her city life, especially her beautiful jonquils, she enjoyed being closer to her family and kept up with all the family news through nightly phone conversations with her sisters. Though in later years, she began losing her eyesight and hearing, her mind stayed sharp, which helped her to live independently for so long.
Marguerite leaves her daughter Maureen (Cluff) Carey and her husband Raymond of Marshfield, and son Joseph W. Cluff Jr. and his partner Claire Zansler of Huntington Beach, CA, her grandchildren Carolyn (Conaghan) Shanley and her husband Michael of Marshfield, James Conaghan and his wife Michele of Superior, CO, and Brian Conaghan of Traverse City, MI. She also leaves great-grandchildren Ian and Kristen Shanley, Avery and Callum Conaghan. In addition she leaves her beloved sister June (Farrenkopf) Meadows of Phoenixville, PA and many nephews and nieces. "Aunt Miggie" as she was affectionately called by her family, was predeceased by her husband of over 40 years, Joseph W. Cluff, her parents Helen (Raycroft) and Carl Farrenkopf, her sisters Helen Magee and Mary Teed, and brothers James and Leo Farrenkopf, and Robert Tierney.
