Obituary

Mark Goddard (born Charles Harvey Goddard) passed away Tuesday October 10, 2023. He was 87. Mark starred in a number of television series but is most well-known for portraying Major Don West in the CBS series Lost in Space.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts and raised in Scituate, Mark was the youngest of five children.  In 1959, after just three weeks in Hollywood, he landed a role in the CBS Television series Johnny Ringo.  Soon after he landed a role in the ensemble cast of The Detectives.

In 1978, Mark starred with Liza Minnelli on Broadway in the musical The Act and played the lead in the movies Roller Boogie and Blue Sunshine. He was very much beloved for his soap roles; Ted Clayton in One Life to Live, Lt. Paul Reed on The Doctors, and Derek Barrington on General Hospital. He made a cameo appearance in the reboot film Lost in Space in 1998 as the general in charge of the Jupiter Mission, and superior officer to his former character, Major Don West.

Mark returned to education 30 years after finishing college. He received his master's degree in education from Bridgewater State College and focused on special education, working for almost twenty years as a special education teacher at the F.L. Chamberlain School in Middleboro, Massachusetts.

In retirement, Mark and his wife, Evelyn, loved traveling and visited nearly 40 countries together in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.  They also shared a strong faith and served as Stephen Ministers for over 5 years at Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Mark loved playing sports as a young man and avidly following the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox over the years.  He also enjoyed playing cribbage with friends. But most of all, according to Evelyn, he had a talent for making others feel special and for making them laugh.  His kindness and humor will be missed by many.

Mark is survived by his wife, Evelyn Pezzulich, and their son, John, as well as children Melissa and Michael (from first marriage to Marcia Rogers) and Catherine and Caleb (from second marriage to actress Susan Anspach); grandchildren Nicholas, Henry, Hugo, and Sophie; and siblings June and Patricia. He is predeceased by his parents Clarence and Ruth (Delaronde) Goddard and siblings James and Verdella.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Parish Church of Duxbury, preceded by a viewing at the church from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Duxbury Mayflower Cemetery.
