Martha Carney was born in Boston, the child of Tom and Anna Carney. She attended Boston Public Schools, Cathedral High School and worked her way through Boston Teachers College as a cashier for Stop and Shop in Roslindale where she was selected as 'Checker of the Year' for the food chain. She finished at the top of the Boston teachers exam and became teacher in charge of the Williams School in Roxbury where she taught for two years.
She met the love of her life, John McLaughlin, at a Saint Patrick's party where a mutual interest in Irish music drew them together and rocked the party. After a 6 week courtship they decided to marry. Martha left teaching to raise a family of five children who blest her with nine grandchildren. During their marriage of 53 years, she worked with John to build a home on the South River that became a welcoming home to many. Turkey dinners for 25 and lobster bakes for 75 people were Martha's specialties.
As the children grew she volunteered in the local schools, becoming chairperson of the Marshfield School Volunteers. Martha shared her deep faith in God and served as Religious Education Director at St Ann's in Marshfield for 33 years before retirement.
Martha had a lifelong love of music, singing, sports and reading which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Martha and John loved to sing "Galway City" and "The Maid of The Sweet Brown Knowe" whenever they had a chance and were known as "The Duet" in O'Donovan's Hotel in Clonakilty Co Cork. She was a season ticket holder for BC football and Basketball and helped send all five children to Boston College. She enjoyed travel especially to San Francisco, Ireland, Maui and Wellfleet where she loved boating and swimming with children and grandchildren. Even during the last few months of hospitalization she would flash her winning smile that would enrich all those who saw her.
