Obituary

Martha Ann Rooney, 72, a beloved sister and aunt, died peacefully on January 13, 2023 after a long illness.

Martha grew up in Winchester and lived in Duxbury, Miami, Florida, Bridgewater, and Brockton. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Gertrude Rooney. Martha is survived by her sisters: Joan Shea and her husband Harry of Duxbury; Patricia Simons and her husband Jeffrey of Duxbury; Eileen Kimmett and her husband Robert of Kittery, Maine. Martha was predeceased by her sisters Marilyn Soboski of Carver and Mary Regina Cleary of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Martha also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Martha graduated from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing where she worked as an emergency room nurse for many years. She continued her education earning a BA at Boston College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Martha went on to earn a master's degree in nursing education from Boston University. She became an emergency room administrator at North Miami Hospital, and later in Savanah, Georgia. After returning to Massachusetts, Martha was a nursing instructor at several Community colleges.

Martha was a 37-year survivor of brain cancer. Twice, she endured brain surgery and yet she continued her passion for nursing by teaching many new nursing students.  Martha loved being a nurse.  She was, first and foremost, a nurse – right to the end of her life.

Martha was a woman of great faith, a regular attendant at Mass and had a deep devotion to the rosary.  She taught CCD and was a Eucharist Minister at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Bridgewater. She loved to travel and made pilgrimages to Medjugorje and Fatima. Her favorite place was always her parent's beach house by Green Harbor where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
