Mary B. “Mimi” McCarthy, age 84, of Duxbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
Born in Boston to the late Mary K. and Eugene McSweeney of Medford, MA, Mimi was raised and educated in Medford, where she attended Immaculate Conception Church and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1959. She went on to graduate from Laboure School of Nursing in 1962.
Mimi was the beloved wife of the late Maurice E. “Mossy” McCarthy, Jr., MD — her sweetheart and best friend for 52 years.
Together, Mimi and Mossy raised their six children in Wollaston. After becoming empty nesters, they relocated to Duxbury while continuing to cherish summers at “the Cottage” in Scituate, joyfully surrounded by their grandchildren.
She was the devoted Mother of Sean M. McCarthy and his wife, Elizabeth, of Arvada, CO; Sheila A. Kaplan of Scituate; Maura C. Cutler and her husband, James W. Cutler III, of Madison, CT; Maurice E. McCarthy, III of Walpole; Terrence E. McCarthy and his wife, Amber, of Grand Rapids, MI; and Brendan P. McCarthy and his wife, Emily, of Hanover.
She treasured every moment spent as “Mimi” to her 13 grandchildren: Ela Megan, Michael, James, Teoman “Theo”, Mary Isabel, Lucy, Mary Katherine, Reese, Nathaniel, Charlotte, Carson, Beckett, and Violet.
She is survived by her loving brothers: James G. McSweeney and his wife, Elaine, of Peabody; Eugene J. McSweeney and his wife, Lorraine, of Wells, ME; and Neal J. McSweeney and his wife, Nancy, of Medford. She was predeceased by her in-laws, John McCarthy and his wife, Elizabeth, and Joyce McDonough and her husband, Edward.
After dedicating herself to raising her family, Mimi returned to her long-cherished career in nursing. Deeply grounded in her faith, she was an active volunteer and a constant presence in her community. She enjoyed water walking, gardening, sewing, and reading.
Mimi will be remembered for her radiant smile, effortless style, warm laughter, and gentle spirit. Her kindness and grace left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont Street, Duxbury, MA, on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM, with burial immediately following in the Mayflower Cemetery of Duxbury.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mary McCarthy to support Dr. Marlise Luskin Research Fund at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
