Obituary

Mary-Lou McLean of Marshfield, Massachusetts, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the age of 84 after a short battle with cancer. Mary-Lou was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Mac McLean in 2020, was the mother of two, grandmother to three and friend to so many.

Mary-Lou was born October 28, 1938, in Cambridge Massachusetts. She grew up in Scituate, Massachusetts and graduated from Norwell High School in 1956 and Lasell College in 1958. She married Lloyd 'Mac' McLean of Abington on November 9, 1958. They moved to Marshfield in 1961 and raised a son and daughter together. Mary-Lou completed her statewide microbiology certifications and worked in various physician offices, then the microbiology and chemistry lab in Jordan Hospital in Plymouth for 22 years, retiring in 1997.

She was loved by everyone she met from every walk of life and generation. She had a sharp mind, bright smile, independent strong spirit and was an eternal optimist. She was an avid volunteer who gave back to her community for over 30 years. She read for the Talking Information Center (TIC) for over 20 years, taught numerous quilting and sewing classes at the Marshfield Senior Center, and was a regular volunteer at the Marshfield Audubon Society and Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition, as a true artist in quilting and consummate student and teacher of sewing, she sewed over 200 quilts that were donated to the Quilts for Kids Foundation. Never one to seek recognition, she was awarded the Woman of the Year for the Cambridge/Marshfield YMCA in 2014.

Mary-Lou always had her bags packed and was ready for any adventure visiting her children, grandchildren and friends at the area lakes, mountains, beaches, and sporting events. For years, she would be seen riding a tandem bicycle through the streets of Marshfield and surrounding communities with her friend Jackie Powell who was visually impaired, and she was part of a special lady's group, the Rexhame Beach Girls. Mary-Lou flourished with her grandchildren, building significant and meaningful relationships into their young adulthood and was always willing to travel with the family to fun locations. Above all, her greatest love was her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tim and Louise Riordan and her husband Mac McLean. She was survived by her son Tim McLean and his wife Debbie of Gulfport, Florida and her daughter, Laurie McLean Farris and her husband, Len Farris of Laconia, New Hampshire. She also leaves her grandchildren, Taylor Farris and her fiancé Danny Sidorenko of Hoboken, New Jersey, Casey Click and her husband Jack Click of Raleigh, North Carolina and Drew Farris of Somerville, Massachusetts. In addition, Mary-Lou leaves her brothers and their wives, Tim Riordan and Mary-Jane Riordan of Marshfield and James Riordan and Trish Riordan of Aiken, South Carolina.
