Obituary

Mary Amalfitano Micarelli, age 91, of Marshfield, MA, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022. Matriarch of a close loving family, she will be missed by her children Paula Sullivan of Marshfield and Joe Micarelli of Hingham; their spouses Walter Sullivan and Angel Micarelli; her beloved grandchildren Ray Micarelli, Christopher Micarelli, Tori (Sullivan) Blase, Noelle Micarelli, and Julianne Sullivan; and her extended family, including Laurie Borden. Mary's son Dom and her husband Clement passed away before her.

Born in Providence, RI, Mary grew up in a close-knit Italian neighborhood, the daughter of Italian immigrants from Forio d'Ischia, Francesco Amalfitano and Luisa Madonna Amalfitano. She met her future husband, Clement "Mic" Micarelli, at Mount Pleasant High School. Together, they made a life in New York City, where Mic, an accomplished artist, worked as a fashion illustrator and portrait painter. Mary and Mic loved music, art, and good food, values they instilled in their children. The family moved back to New England in 1972.

Mary was a crossword fanatic, routinely finishing the Boston Globe Sunday puzzle in one sitting. Although not politically vocal, Mary was a liberal with a genuine interest in knowing more about the complex issues of the day. She loved listening to Frank Sinatra, reading good books (To Kill a Mockingbird was her favorite), and poring over recipes. Those recipes turned into countless amazing meals – the kind of meals people dream about. From linguine with clam sauce to rabbit to a simple frittata, Mary was a magnificent cook. She welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and something delicious. But her most treasured moments were spent with her grandchildren, all of whom know how much Grandma adored them.

A celebration of her life for family and friends will be held. Donations in her honor can be made to the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, where her beloved son Dom was cared for in his final days, by mail c/o the Norwell VNA, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell MA 02061 or online at: https://www.nvna.org/
