Mary Frances Mooney died peacefully in her sleep on February 26, 2024 at the age of 83 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham. Mary Fran was born in Tonawanda NY on July 31, 1940 to Richard and Bernice Sullivan. Mary grew up in Tonawanda NY, Minneapolis MN, Rochester NY, Chatham, NJ, and Medina, OH. She would often travel to Canada where she fondly recalled summer vacations with her family.
She attended Our Lady of Mercy in Rochester, NY and Bayley-Ellard High School in Madison, NJ, before studying at Marywood College in Scranton, PA. Her time there was cut short when she met the love of her life, Walter Mooney in 1960. She loved to reminisce about how their courtship grew with each day and how her parents finally approved of her boyfriend. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married in 1961 in Ohio and then jetted off to California to start their wedded adventure.
Children meant the world to Mary, and she dedicated her life to raising her five children, Kevin Mooney, Patrick Mooney, Erin Gutman, Maureen Mooney, and Kathleen Mooney.
Mary was also an avid golfer at the Marshfield Country Club, and she was known to be quite the bowler on Wednesday nights with her friends. She and Walter had many adventures as well, including yearly trips to Aruba, one of their favorite places. Mary loved to read, swim, play tennis, and take long drives exploring the places around her.
Mary treasured her time with her fifteen grandkids and loved being their Nana, never failing to read a story, play hide and seek, or run around the yard laughing with them.
Mary Fran had many pets, and you would often find them sleeping beside her on the couch. She was also a rebellious sort and could be seen sneaking them her leftovers.
Mary was an active member of St Christine's Parish in Marshfield and the Welcome Wagon, devoting her time and energy to supporting fellow parishioners, engaging in community events, and stepping up whenever anything was needed.
In her recent years, the residents of Marshfield would see her traveling along Furnace Street in her wheelchair where she would greet every single car with a wave and a smile. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, humor, and compassion. She was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Walter Mooney, and her parents Richard and Bernice Sullivan. She is survived by her sister Patricia Flocke, her husband Lee Flocke; and her brother Richard Sullivan, and his wife Jan Sullivan; her son Kevin Mooney, and wife Diane Mooney (of Lancaster) and children Tara, Patrick, Michael, John, Mary, Daniel, and Deirdre; her son Patrick Mooney (of Halifax), her daughter Erin Gutman (of Mashpee) and her children Zachary, Benjamin, Rachel, Rebecca, Trevor, and Katherine; her daughter Maureen Mooney (of Marshfield), and her daughter Kathleen Mooney (of Plymouth) and her children Hunter and Meadow Breault.
