Mary Ann (Cooper) Worthington, 89, of Marshfield, MA, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025.
Born on April 21, 1936, in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of Marian Louise (Davis) Cooper and the Rev. Chester R. Cooper. Mary Ann's early years were spent in Chicopee, Massachusetts, before her life journey took her to Summit, New Jersey; Monroe and Trumbull, Connecticut; and later to Sun City Center, Florida.
Mary Ann graduated from Chicopee High School in 1953 after skipping the 7th grade and went on to attend the University of Massachusetts. A proud member of the Massachusetts Beta chapter of Pi Beta Phi, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1957, followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1958.
Her professional career began at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where she helped obtain three patents related to synergistic polyethylene antioxidants. She later spent 19 years as a part-time lecturer at the University of Bridgeport, inspiring students in introductory and environmental chemistry. In 1998, she retired from Handy and Harman, where she served as chief chemist. Not quite ready to leave chemistry behind, she then became a Fellow of ASTM International.
Mary Ann's life reflected a balance of science, faith, and service. She held leadership roles as president of the Nichols United Methodist Women and the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Sun City Center, Florida. For nine years, she chaired the Greater Bridgeport CROP Hunger Walk, tirelessly advocating for those in need. She was also a dedicated member of the American Association of University Women. Her passion for family history led to memberships in both the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Affectionately known as "Grandma Google," Mary Ann's quick wit, and encyclopedic knowledge made her a formidable Trivial Pursuit partner and a source of answers to nearly any question her family posed. Her warm smile and steadfast belief that all humans share a common purpose—regardless of religious background, political belief, or heritage—were her calling card to all she met.
Mary Ann is survived by her son, Brad; her daughters, Judi Marchand (Paul) and Jan Martin (Terry); and her cherished grandchildren: Grant and Mitchell Worthington; Morgan (Justin), MacKenzie, and Mason Marchand; and Sydney and Jarred Martin.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, David Gibbs Worthington; her son, Bruce David Worthington; her brothers, Alan Cooper of Morongo Valley, California, and Richard Cooper (Gilma) of Williston Park, New York; and her parents.
A Memorial service will be held at Hall Funeral home located at 78 Main Street Thomaston, ME., Sunday Dec 7th at 10:00 a.m.
