Obituary

MaryEllen McCarthy (Creed) Hallowell passed away peacefully on December 3 at age 91. She was born in Dorchester on June 3, 1934 the fourth of six children to Margaret (McCarthy) Creed and William Carey Creed. She attended Catholic School in Boston until the 7th grade when her family permanently moved to what had been their summer home in Marshfield (Green Harbor), MA. She was a good student and after graduating she attended LaSalle Junior college until a bout of Hepatitis interrupted her studies. She then chose to work at the Somerset Hotel in Boston where she organized special events for various companies and clients.

In 1958, she started dating another Marshfield resident, Bruce E. Hallowell, Sr. who had been a year ahead of her in school, and was a minister's son. They married on January 23, 1959, and remained married for 44 years until Bruce's passing in 2003. They moved to Hudson, MA in 1960 where they raised their three children. While managing family life, MaryEllen also worked outside the home, putting to use the secretarial skills she had begun learning at LaSalle. She worked for an insurance agency in Boston and then became an ESL Teacher for the Portuguese students and eventually a school secretary at the elementary, high school, superintendent's office and JFK middle school in Hudson. She was beloved by all the teachers and staff and very proud of her work in the school department. She enjoyed family, friends, dinner and dancing and a good whiskey sour, and, of course, her daily chats with her sister Peggy.

MaryEllen is survived by her children Bruce Eric Hallowell, Jr, and his wife Donna of Tyngsborough, MA, Cindy Ann (Hallowell) Hoglund and her husband Gary of Amesbury, MA, and Robert Gary Hallowell and his partner Carol Kelly of Hollis, NH and a total of 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, MaryEllen is survived by her sister, Margaret "Peggy" M. (Creed) Scollins of Marshfield, and brother John P. Creed and his wife Nancy of Kingston, and was pre-deceased by her brothers, James, William, and Joseph and their spouses and by her brother-in-law Donald Scollins. Her many nieces and nephews nicknamed her Auntie 'Lulla' and she always made sure our whole family was there for all the major events and she made sure to bring her fudge or banana bread along as treats. While she left Marshfield in 1959 for Hudson, with brief times after in Venice, FL, and Kingston, MA her heart and soul never really left her beloved Marshfield.

MaryEllen's obituary wouldn't be complete without speaking about her devotion to her Boston Sports teams. Whether it be the Patriots, Bruins, Celtics or her true love, the Boston Red Sox – no one could match her in terms of her passion and optimistic outlook, the loss column never swayed her, another win was just around the corner. Starting at the age of 12 she would attend games with her father with the "weekender" season tickets he bought for both of them. Although the Red Sox weren't often contenders back then, she remembers seeing all the greats come through Fenway whether they were Red Sox or their competition. Her father attended the first-ever Red Sox game at Fenway Park, and she attended the first-ever double-header.

Another Red Sox connection was her unbroken streak of donating to the Jimmy Fund starting in 1948 when she dropped change into a jar in downtown Boston for the then Boston Braves new charity which was taken over by the Red Sox when the Braves left Boston in 1953. She has donated to the Jimmy Fund every year since its beginnings through 2025.

MaryEllen will be remembered at a wake at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.on Wednesday December 10th, and a Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 40 Canal Street in Marshfield Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, MaryEllen personally requested that you make donations to the Red Sox Jimmy Fund in her name (and to say a little prayer for another Boston sports championship!)
