Maureen Catherine Saunders, Mo, Mosie, Mimi, a resident of Marshfield and formerly a long-time resident of Duxbury, passed away after a brief illness at the Brigham and Williams Hospital in Boston on August 3, 2023, at age 81.

Maureen was born in Utica, NY on January 12, 1942, the oldest of three children to the late Charles William Callahan and Marie (Hanrahan) Callahan. Raised on Spratt Place in Utica with her brother C. William (Bill) and sister Ellen (Culver).  She graduated Valedictorian from Utica Catholic Academy (UCA) and furthered her education at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse, graduating in 1962. Maureen went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College, graduating in 1966. It was during this time that she met her husband of 57 years, Robert (Bob) Saunders, marrying in Utica in 1966. She later received her Master's in Health Promotion from Bridgewater State College.

Maureen lived most of her married life in Duxbury, MA, where she raised her family and worked in the Duxbury school system for 25 years as a school nurse. It was here that she positively impacted the lives of countless students and was loved and respected by faculty and students alike.

In her free time, Maureen loved playing bridge, going for walks on the beach with Bob, volunteering, serving on several community boards, staying active, camping, cooking, and knitting.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Maureen was a "force", our quarterback, the director, a doer, there for anyone in need, often before they even knew they were in need, a fixer of problems, an overachiever, an active member of her community, a rabid bridge player, an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend, aunt, advocate for others, and beach walk lover. She was smart, compassionate, so very strong, younger than her years, and always full of gratitude.

Maureen is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Saunders, brother C. William Callahan (Sue), and sister Ellen Culver (Bob).  She was the loving Mother of Sheila LaPierre and her husband Paul LaPierre of Glastonbury CT; Mark Saunders of Madbury, NH; Michael Saunders of Taunton; Meghan DeGroot and her husband Jake DeGroot of Whitefish, MT; and Katie O'Mara and her husband Brian O'Mara of Marshfield.

She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Briana Stringer, Tommy Saunders, Drew Saunders, Calista Saunders, Torin Saunders, Chase LaPierre, Lexi LaPierre, Duncan DeGroot, Lucy O'Mara and Maeve O'Mara and one great grandchild Oliver Stringer, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church, 40 Canal Street in Marshfield. Burial will be private.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Empower Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), co-founded and run by her niece Carrie Callahan. This is an organization near and dear to Maureen's heart, where she volunteered her nursing services. Empower SCI is a non-profit corporation established to enable individuals with spinal cord injuries to lead happier, more meaningful and more independent lives.
