Nancy Pierce Currie age 78, died peacefully on February 20, 2024, after several months of struggling with complications from diabetes, at South Shore Hospital with her family at her side. Nancy was born on November 02,1945 in Fort Totten, Queens, New York, to Adelaide Reinemann and Norman M. Pierce. She grew up in Bedford Village, N.Y. graduating from Fox Lane High School in 1963. She received her B.A. from SUNY Oneonta NY in 1967 and went on to take an M.A. from Cambridge College later in her career. She began her teaching career at Brookline MA High in 1968 and married her husband Matthew that same year. They moved to Marshfield in 1970, where they have lived for 54 years. Nancy joined the faculty at Marshfield High in 1972, where she taught home economics and then became the health department director until she retired in 2006. Nancy became known as a tireless mentor and resource for her students and younger faculty colleagues, as well as a talented grant writer. In retirement she was elected to three terms on the Marshfield School Committee, continuing her advocacy for a broad student curriculum and helping implement the construction of a new town high school.
Her avocations were many. A younger Nancy was often seen swimming at Green Harbor, her favorite beach. She was a volunteer at the Marshfield Food Pantry, an exhibitor and judge of handcrafts at the Marshfield Fair, an avid quilter who organized and taught at quilting clubs at the YWCA and the Sanctuary Church. She was a board member at the Marshfield Senior Center, and perhaps closest to her heart, a longtime trustee and officer at the Clift Rodgers Free Library in Marshfield Hills. She always seemed to find extra time for coffee and a funny story with her family and friends. A family friend describes her as "a gem of a woman, so graceful, kind, funny, and fun".
Nancy was a devoted mother and grandmother, and is survived by her husband Matthew Alan Currie, her sister Susan Downs of Newmarket NH, her son Michael James Currie, his wife Stacey and daughters Gracelyn 19 and Isabella 14 of Templeton MA, her daughter Laura Page (Currie) Fitzpatrick and her son Ryan 13 of Whitman MA, and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
Nancy will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit. She had a remarkable ability to brighten the lives of those around her with her infectious smile, humor, and genuine care for others. Nancy's compassionate nature extended beyond her family, students, and community, as she was always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need and offer words of comfort and encouragement.
Calling hours are planned for Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home located at 1755 Ocean St, Marshfield, MA 02050.
