Nancy Elizabeth Grundman, a resident of Marshfield, Massachusetts, died suddenly on March 27, 2020 in nearby Weymouth. She was 84. Nancy is survived by her husband of 62 years Frank, their son Steven and his wife Linell, brother Fred Legate and his wife Susan, and grandchildren Erin Mooney, Scott Mooney, Michael Grundman, and Mary Grundman. She also enjoyed the love of nieces Joanne Eldrenkamp, Rhea Grundman, Traci Guarino, and Amy Legate, and of nephews Thomas and Richard Grundman. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Doris Legate, and her daughter Susan, who died in 2015.
Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts at the height of the Great Depression, Nancy grew up in small towns throughout New England with her father, a hardware store manager, and mother, a teacher, before attending Westbrook Junior College in Maine. Nancy met Frank in 1951 as sophomores at Falmouth (Massachusetts) High School; they were married at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1958; and she gave birth to their two children in Seattle during Frank's first tour of duty. Nancy was the steady-hand homemaker of a busy military family that moved nine times over the next 20 years to assignments that ranged from San Francisco to Miami and included two separate stints in Cleveland, where the family lived for nine of those years. During the forty years following Frank's retirement from the Coast Guard, Nancy made a friend-filled, family-centered life in Fairfield, Guilford, and Niantic, Connecticut before moving to Marshfield in 2016.
Nancy will be remembered for the treasury of love that she bestowed on family and friends. Most especially, Nancy's motherly affection placed thoughtful sweetness upon her children and grandchildren, a special touch that has lightened their lives. Nancy was the gracious, caring confidant of close friendships made and maintained over the years and miles of her long life. Still, it is her partnership with Frank and the constancy of their love that runs through the center of the beautiful story that was Nancy Grundman's happy life.
Nancy's ashes will be inurned at the Columbarium of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut at a service currently scheduled for June 20th.
