Obituary

Nancy A. (McCormack) Pearce of Marshfield, MA passed away on September 5, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family after a fierce and courageous battle with breast cancer leaving a tremendous void in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Nancy was the beloved wife of Jamie Pearce and devoted daughter of Donald and the late Ethel McCormack of Medford, MA. She was the proud and doting mother of Justin and Michelle Comeau of Marshfield, MA and loving stepmother to Michael and Tara Pearce.  Cherished sister of Donald McCormack and his wife Jean of Dartmouth, MA, Patricia (McCormack) Grimes and her husband John of Kingstown, RI.  Nancy was a remarkable and adored aunt to Erin, Sarah, Danny, Sean, and Katie.  Nancy leaves this life too soon and is survived by dear aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends, neighbors and coworkers who will remember her joyful exuberance, kindness, humor and tenacity.  She lived a wonderful life that will never be forgotten.

Proud graduate of Medford High School, Nancy received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Tufts University in 1983.  She was fulfilled by her work for the past six years at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer and the previous twenty-three years as an Industrial Hygienist for the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards, Occupational Safety and Health Program.  She was an active and well-respected member of American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).  A bright, skilled, and talented scientist, Nancy will be remembered for her professionalism and incredible work ethic.  Often with a smile, she could pull teams of people together with a common mission never minimizing their important work for making the world a safer place to work and live.

An avid traveler both recreationally and professionally, Nancy delighted at the opportunity to meet new people and witness new marvels of different cultures.  Whether enjoying the salt in her hair on a cruise, hiking a rainforest, biking a scenic trail or presenting slides before a room of firefighters, Nancy made new friends wherever she went.  And, while the world was her oyster, she often found her greatest solace camping at Nickerson State Park, where she delighted in each sunset and the occasional rains that reminded her that so much in life is even beyond her control.

Nancy modeled a full and balanced life to all who knew her.  She enjoyed the quiet meditations of yoga and the thrill of exercising at the gym.  She loved to cook and became a fierce advocate for healthy living and organic foods to feed her mind, body and soul.  She also took great pride in gardening.  Each plant was meticulously groomed and all seemed to bloom on her command throughout all the seasons.  During her exhausting treatments, when one might think that Nancy would enjoy a nap, instead she would delight in making sure that the life around her succeeded.

Nancy's greatest joy was her fellowship with others.  Nancy loved introducing friends to each other, if not in person then through sweet stories that only she could tell with the perfect balance of excitement and good humor.  She made it a priority in her life to share herself with her friends – and it felt that everyone she knew was a friend.

Never known to pay full price, Nancy was a seasoned, tactical shopper.  She could be found opening and closing stores the day after Thanksgiving, only resting to enjoy the enchantments of the season with the friends and family who had the energy to keep up with her.  Her home was then soon adorned from top to bottom with picturesque carolers, beautiful handmade ornaments, lights and ribbons that charmed visitors with a sense of joy and peace.

Nancy's family has been humbled by the outpouring of love and kindness by all who knew, loved and now miss her dreadfully.  They especially want to thank the oncology teams at Mass General, Dana Farber and South Shore Hospitals for their tireless work to treat patients while heroically searching for a cure for breast cancer.  Special thanks goes out to Fran Tilly, who compassionately and selflessly supported Nancy and her family throughout the ups and downs, highs and lows of her illness.
