Nancy Lu (French) Powers, of Marshfield, passed away on October 8th after a lengthy illness. She was 83.
The daughter of Sara Kathryn and Luis Nathan French, Nancy was born on January 10, 1935 in Danville, IL and grew up in Kouts, IN. She was a 1953 graduate of Kouts High School and attended Indiana University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the Indiana University School of Nursing in 1958.
Nancy's life was one of devotion to the care of others. In her vocation as a Registered Nurse, she worked in cardiac care at St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven and Middlesex Memorial Hospital in Middletown, CT before moving into psychiatric nursing at Bridgewater State Hospital and Greater Quincy Mental Health. She finished her career as Director of Clinical Services at St. Francis House in Boston, retiring in 2000.
A devout Christian, Nancy's spiritual life was spent side by side with her late husband, the Rev. Alden W. Powers. Together, they advocated for civil rights and social justice as they tended to parishioners at All Saints Church in Indianapolis, IN and at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshfield. After her husband's passing in 1986, Nancy continued on and became a strong spiritual guide as a member of the vestry and altar guild at Trinity and then as a Junior Warden and church school teacher at St. Mary's Church in Upham's Corner, Dorchester. Nancy was accepted as an Associate member of the Society of the Sisters of Saint Margaret in 1991 and remained one until her death. Nancy was a tireless advocate for people suffering from mental illness and gave much of her time to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
Nancy's greatest devotion was to her family and friends who she was always quick to comfort, support and bring joy and laughter to with her boundless love and endearing manner and smile. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.
