Obituary

Mrs. Noreen Emily (Johnson) Connell, cherished wife and mother, a beloved pioneer in the sport of gymnastics and an adored member of her community, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026. She was 88 years old.

Noreen was born on May 20, 1937, in Winchester, Massachusetts, to her loving parents Nora and George Johnson. From an early age, she displayed a passion for movement and creativity that would shape her outstanding career and leave an indelible mark on the world of gymnastics. After decades in Winchester where she developed her life-long friendships, Noreen and her family moved to Marshfield in 1975 where they planted their roots for the next 50 years.

A trailblazer in her field, Noreen dedicated her life to advancing the sport she loved. In high school Noreen’s innovative spirit led her to create the Winchester Tumblettes, a program that remains to this day and has brought joy and opportunity to countless aspiring athletes. She served as a National Gymnastics Judge with the United States Gymnastics Association (USGA), where her expertise and dedication earned her widespread respect. She also coached gymnastics at North Reading and Marshfield High Schools, inspiring countless young athletes with her knowledge and encouragement. Noreen owned and operated her own dance studio, where she shared her love of movement with students of all ages.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Noreen had a compassionate heart that guided her later years. She devoted herself to caring for the elderly, adults with special needs, and was highly involved in both the Easter Seal program and the Special Olympics. She embodied kindness and generosity in every aspect of her life.

Noreen was enriched by many hobbies that reflected her vibrant personality including a lifelong love of swimming, hockey, reading and shopping. Later in life, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and treasured time spent with family. Christmas held a special place in Noreen’s heart—she delighted in gift-giving and creating magical memories for those around her. Known for being fun loving, giving, and kind; she cherished time with friends and took great interest in their lives.

Noreen was married to James Connell for 53 wonderful years until his passing in 2014. Together they built a close and loving family that brought immense joy to their lives. She is survived by her children: daughter Cara Jane Blumenshein and her husband Bill; son Kenan James Connell; daughter Julie Ann Rae and her husband Steve; and son-in-law Eric Taranto. Her legacy continues through her nine grandchildren and their loved ones —Jarrett & Christina; Bryer & Oscar; Zack & Jenn—and great-grandson Jase, Clay & Jillian; Devyn & Lou; Troy; Shealyn & Adam; and Abigail & Kenzi. Noreen is also survived by her brother George Johnson.

She was predeceased by her daughter Noreen Elizabeth Taranto; sisters Carlene Arsenault and Marguerite Dykeman; and her parents Nora and George Johnson.
