Obituary

Oscar Albert LeBlanc, affectionately known to both friends and family as "Gus", passed away on April 1, 2024, at the age of 88. Gus was married for 63 years to Patricia Anne (Dionne); she predeceased him in April of 2022. He was the beloved father of daughters Michele and Amy, the cherished grandfather of Kerry, Timothy, Zachary and James and the proud great-grandfather of Adaleigh and Ashton. Gus was raised in Bellingham, MA, the sixth son of seven boys born to Walter and Albina (Champagne) LeBlanc. He was predeceased by his brothers Lionel, Robert, Maurice, Norman, Ernest (Pete) and Raymond.

As a young man, he excelled as a musician. He played trumpet on the radio for a polka band in addition to performing as a trumpet player for numerous functions in Rhode Island. Following his high school graduation, Gus began degree work at Boston University. He took a leave from his studies to enter the military where he served his country in the US Army from 1955-1957. He received notice and commendation for his performance,"often under adverse conditions" as a member of a special entertainment band, playing trumpet for troops in Korea and Far East bases.

Following his release from active duty, Gus continued to serve in the US Army Reserve until his honorable discharge in May of 1963. Gus also returned to Boston University to complete his degree; he graduated with his BA in 1959. He went on to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, excelling and subsequently rising to become a Chief Property Loss Examiner before retiring after more than 40 years with the company.

Gus met his wife Patricia prior to completing his degree when both were employed at McLean Hospital. They lived for a time in Quincy, MA, but then relocated to Marshfield, a locale well- known to his wife, who had summered there for many years in a family cottage in Rexhame,

Gus and his wife were lifelong residents of Marshfield. Devoted to both his family and to being of service, Gus was active in many youth activities and served as Chairman of the Marshfield Youth Committee. He was one of the founding coaches of the Marshfield Youth Football League and served as a Past President of the Marshfield Boys Bowling League. He also actively supported the Marshfield Friends of Music program and Marshfield High School's Key Club organization.

Gus was a Past Distinguished President and Lieutenant Governor of the Marshfield Kiwanis Club and also served the club as both treasurer and secretary. For many years, Gus would utilize his summer vacation time to run the Kiwanis Sub Booth at the Marshfield Fair. The proceeds from the Booth raised funds for scholarships for town youth.

After retiring, Gus supported the Marshfield Lodge of Elks 2494, where he served as the bar and function manager and also provided support for the annual Elk's Lodge Hoop Shoot for youth. Though Gus was often more of a back room fixture due to the nature of his responsibilities, on Saturdays, he could be found enjoying regularly scheduled card games with a small group of his closest friends. An avid poker player, Gus and his wife enjoyed annual vacations to Las Vegas. Following his retirement, he continued to take advantage of opportunities to travel to Atlantic City and joined fellow Elks on road trips to Mohegan Sun.

Gus was just the best of men, absolutely committed to the people and community he loved. Though he could appear a reserved man, those who knew him best thoroughly enjoyed his insight, wry wit and wonderful smile. He loved simple pleasures, which included eating good food, especially the local corn on the cob, pizza during his weekly outings to the Venus II restaurant and Brant Rock ice cream. He avidly followed the Red Sox and the Patriots and both cycled and played golf for many years.

After an honor guard service, Gus will be laid to rest in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on June 20, 2024. Donations may be made in his name to The Marshfield Elks Lodge #2494 Scholarship Fund, by mail P.O. Box 1018, Marshfield MA 02050 and/or Polar Bears International, online at polarbearsinternational.org
