Paul J Mandeville, age 66, died peacefully on Sunday, February 7th 2021, surrounded by his wife and sons, after a courageous 17-month battle with cancer.
Paul was born in Brighton, MA but was raised and lived most of his life in Marshfield, MA. He graduated from Marshfield High School in 1972 and Bridgewater State University in 1976 with a BA in Mathematics.
Paul's interest in technology and passion for problem solving led him to a career in Information Technology and Sciences. He began his professional career at the Massachusetts State Treasury and in 1993 was appointed as an Assistant Treasurer and Receiver General. In 1997, Paul joined the Massachusetts State Lottery as the Assistant Executive Director for Management of Information Technology, a position he would hold for the next 24 years. During that time, he helped lead the Lottery through continued growth and major technological enhancements. Paul was acknowledged for his work throughout his career and most recently in 2018, he received National recognition for his leadership of an extensive multi-year technological transformation at the Lottery.
Paul's utmost passion in life was his family. He found great joy coaching and watching his sons play baseball, soccer and lacrosse. More recently, he especially enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren and was a constant fixture at their performances and sporting events. Paul enjoyed skiing, and introduced his family to the sport through trips throughout New England and out West. Later in life, he would help his grandchildren learn to ski. The family has many lasting memories of spending weekends together at the family condo at Attitash outside North Conway, NH.
Paul also enjoyed golfing with his family and friends including the Thursday night league and the "Mandevilt Invitational" every spring. His favorite rounds included playing Pebble Beach with some of his closest friends for his 60th birthday, and his last round played on Nantucket with his two sons. Paul's interests also included his motorcycle, music, sambuca (with three coffee beans), a good scotch, and a nice cigar.
Paul will be remembered for his sarcastic sense of humor, quick wit, and humble nature. But the most lasting memories will be the indelible bonds he built with co-workers, friends and family. Many considered him a mentor and a brother.
Paul left us too early and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife Judy (Mazzola) of 45 years, his son Paul and wife Stacey of Westwood, MA, and their children; Mila, Dylan and Eli, and son Michael and his wife Joanna of Westwood, MA and their children; Madeleine and Ramona.
He is also survived by his many siblings on both sides of his family, including; Lyn and Rich O'Brien, Jim and Donna Mandeville, Dick Mandeville, Betsy and Joe Kelley, Maryanne and David Evans, Dom and Jody Mazzola, Marie and Paul Hoynack, Angela and Roland St. Hilaire, Denise and John Maher, Lisa Mazzola, Br. David Anthony Mazzola, Paul and Patty Mazzola, and his mother in-law, Anne Mazzola. Paul also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
In light of the current circumstances, services will be private and a "Celebration of Paul's life" will be held at a later date.
Paul was a strong advocate for STEM education and a proponent of the continued studies and advancement of technology. For those who wish, donations can be made to Marshfield Education Foundation. Donations made in Paul Mandeville's name will be directed towards a grant in the STEM curriculum in Marshfield Public Schools.
