Obituary

Phyllis J. (Opelski) Pelland, 83, of Marshfield died on Tuesday, September 13 after a brief illness.  Phyllis is pre-deceased by her beloved husband Paul Pelland.  She leaves behind her children Rick Pelland and his wife Carol of Whitman, Pam and her husband Phil Joy of Marshfield, and Patrick Pelland and his wife Donna of Marshfield.  She is also survived by her grandchildren: Elissa (Pelland) Carroll and her husband Justin, Jen and Keri McKenzie, Ricky Pelland and his wife Dani, her bonus grandchildren: Tyler Joy and his wife Kaitlin, Kaleigh Joy and Timmy Joy; her cherished great grandchildren: Kennedy Carroll, Millie and Nolan Wolfe, and Brady Pelland; and other beloved family and friends including: her sister Janice Maguire. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Erna Opelski and her sister Linda Cloutier.

Phyllis was born in Brighton, Massachusetts and in her early teens moved to Rexhame where her family built strong ties with the community.  Phyllis and her family were known for their countless block parties and their home was a haven for neighbors during blizzards.  She married Paul in 1956, and in 1966 purchased Marshfield Family Skateland.  The family, including their children, lived above the rink in a small apartment.  She always famously said she didn't mind the small apartment because "they had the biggest basement in town!"  The rink was a social hotspot for Marshfield and surrounding towns hosting 24-hour skate-a-thons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, parties, and roller hockey games.  Sometimes Phyllis would occasionally fill in as the team goalie.

In 1981, Phyllis and her husband moved to Holiday, Florida where she lived until returning to Marshfield in 2014. Phyllis enjoyed many things in her life, especially playing cards, trips to the casino, playing bingo, being a Grammy and teaching her grandchildren her love of music, watching a ball game, and enjoying meals out with friends. She was a skilled baker and loved baking a variety of treats for her family, and friends who became family; even sharing her favorite recipes with them before she passed. Phyllis touched countless lives with her kind spirit and unwavering love.  She will be greatly missed.
