Obituary

Reed F. Stewart, 96, was the son of Gertrude and O. Wellington Stewart. He was born in Westwood, Massachusetts in 1926 and grew up in Hyde Park and Kingston. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and finished training as an aviation radioman, just in time for the end of WWII. He married Gail Peterson and after they both finished college, they were educational missionaries for the Episcopal Church in Liberia, where their five children were born. There are now six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren of that marriage.

Reed earned a Master's degree in Geography and worked for the Episcopal Church in community surveys before the family traveled to Kenya, where he taught at Kenyatta Teacher Training College. Returning to the United States, he earned his Doctorate degree in Geography and taught Geography and Anthropology at Bridgewater University. After Gail's death he married Virginia O'Brien of Squantum, who brought 3 daughters and six more grandchildren to the family. In Marshfield, Reed was active in environmental matters and served on several town committees.

Reed was preceded in death by his parents Gertrude and O. Wellington Stewart, his brothers Oswald, Pearson, and David and their wives, his son Ian Stewart and daughter Jeneba Allard. He is survived by his wife Virginia Stewart, daughter Karen Pettengill and husband Sam, son Michael Stewart and wife Stephanie, daughter Lusia Stewart, daughter in-law Jennifer Stewart, daughter Julie Bagchi and husband Sam, daughter Kimberly D'Angelo and husband Jamie, daughter Claire Fitzgerald and partner Stephen Costello; grandchildren Jael Gorham and husband Brian, Evan Reed Stewart, Kate Cohen and husband David, Bonnie and Catherine Stewart, Christopher Allard and wife Kelly, Anjali, Annalise, Emma, Jack, Maia and Marjorie; great-grandchildren Lina, Rose, Alice, Nora and Eli, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
