Richard Fahey passed away suddenly on March 20th, at the age of 63.
A native of Randolph, Richard was one of 10 Fahey siblings. The Fahey family could have been the basis for a modern sitcom, with five boys and five girls. It was those siblings that Richard adored, sharing memories of growing up, playing sports with his brothers, and fighting over family dinners with his sisters.
Richard went to Blue Hills Regional, where he became a stand-out athlete. To this day, his name is still proudly displayed in the gym for holding team records. Richard was inducted into the Blue Hills Hall of Fame in 2004. Richard's scrapbook was the most impressive of anyone you've ever met, with letters from every major college football program in America. His claim to fame was tearing his ACL in front of Joe Paterno, during his senior year.
But it was a trip to the Cape in 1975 that would change Richard's life forever. Sporting a Monty Python accent, he met the love of his life, Brenda. And their love story would be epic. From a proposal in a hospital gown on the side of a highway, to a wedding during a snowstorm on Valentine's Day, Brenda was the love of his life. For 46 years, they were by each other's side every single day; the ultimate picture of love to anyone that met them.
And that marriage gave way to Richard's pride and joy. His two sons, Michael and Ryan. Richard was their hero. He taught them everything they knew about being men, how to throw a baseball, how to hit a foul shot, and how to serve a tennis ball. Richard even tore his ACL, again, while teaching them how to ride their bikes.
Years ago, someone wrote a letter to the editor of the Marshfield Mariner saying "Mr. Fahey is Mr. Baseball." Truer words were never spoken. When Richard moved to Marshfield 30 years ago, he walked onto run-down, overgrown fields. He immediately started coaching Michael and Ryan's teams, all while rebuilding the fields. The boys helped scoop the first clay onto the field, helped lay the first rows of grass, and played under the lights for the very first time together. Richard's mark on the Marshfield community was great.
Richard retired in 2018 after spending decades as a glazier. He then dedicated his free time to his best friend, Lucky. More than just a man and his dog, Richard and Lucky were local celebrities, spending hours at the beach, the Harbor Park or the Rec Center. You'd be hard pressed to find someone that didn't know Richard and Lucky in Ocean Bluff.
Richard will be forever remembered by the love of his life, Brenda; his son, Mike of Marshfield; his sisters, Trisha (Bob), Elaine, Peggy (Paul), and Christine. His brothers, Bob (Carol Ann) and John. His in-laws, Col. Edward and Merle Graham of Cohasset; His sisters-in-law B.J. (Ken) and Susan. His brother-in-law Ted. Richard is survived by countless nieces and nephews and friends who were like family. He was preceded in death by son, Ryan, his parents, Ann and Ed Fahey, his brothers, Joe and Leo, and his sister, Kathy.
A Celebration of Richard's life will be held this summer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for Richard can be made to Marshfield Youth Baseball; PO Box 815, Marshfield, MA 02050
