Richard A. Hall, a lifelong resident of Marshfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 94 and had celebrated his birthday on December 19, 2025. Richard was a distinguished investment professional, a devoted community leader, and, above all, a loving family man.
Born during the Great Depression and raised through World War II, Richard graduated from Marshfield High School in 1949. A standout student-athlete, he captained the football, basketball, and baseball teams, later joking that with a graduating class of about 20 boys, leadership was sometimes a necessity.
A descendant of Mayflower ancestors, Richard spoke of his heritage with characteristic humor and self-deprecation, often saying, "That and two dollars will get you a cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts."
Richard went on to Dartmouth College, earning a bachelor's degree with honors in 1953. Known as "Dick" to friends and classmates, he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and the crew team. He received his MBA from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business in 1954.
After a brief start at Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Richard found his calling in finance. A Chartered Financial Analyst, he spent many years at Scudder, Stevens & Clark, where he rose to Director of Equity Research, Managing Director, and Partner. He retired in 1985 but continued advising clients privately and served in investment and advisory roles for banks and charitable organizations.
A proud veteran, Richard served in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps officer, including three years of sea duty aboard the USS Hyades and the USS Clarence K. Bronson.
Deeply committed to Marshfield, Richard was a longtime member of North Community Church and served on numerous town committees involving schools, library construction, and cable television licensing. He was a member of the original Charter Commission in the 1970s and served two terms as Town Moderator in the 1980s.
His philanthropic leadership included ten years as Chairman of the Board of the Animal Rescue League of Boston and more than forty years advising the organization on financial matters.
Richard's interests included tennis, photography, bird watching, model railroading, and faithfully following Boston sports teams.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois, and their three children: Jonathan (Karen) of Milton, David (Meredith) of Milton, and Meredith (Daniel) Doherty of Marblehead. He took great joy in his ten grandchildren—Jonathan's sons Will and Ben and daughters Jenna and Maddie; David's children Kendall, Parker, and Elizabeth; and Meredith's children Danny, Priscilla, and Owen—and his five great-grandchildren: Josh, Austin, twins Ethan and Gabriel, and Aurora.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Priscilla, and his brother, Danforth. He also leaves Dan's children, Ian, Wendy, and Amy.
Richard will be remembered with deep affection for his integrity, generosity, humor, and steady leadership. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, at 11:00 a.m. at North Community Church, 72 Old Main Street, Marshfield Hills, Massachusetts. A reception will follow across the street at the church parish house.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, online at https://www.arlboston.org/ or North Community Church in Marshfield, by mail to P.O. Box 2, Marshfield, MA 02051.
