Obituary

Rita Crossman Arapoff, a beacon of creativity, love, and devotion, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2024, at the age of 85, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on September 25, 1938, in Winthrop, MA, Rita's journey was one marked by artistry, passion, and a profound love for her family. After graduating from high school in 1956, Rita pursued her artistic aspirations at the Massachusetts College of Art, graduating in 1960. That same year, she embarked on a lifelong journey with her beloved husband, fellow artist John Arapoff. Together, they ventured to Colorado, where they became integral members of the vibrant art community, showcasing their exceptional works.

In Denver, Rita's talent and dedication shone brightly as she served as an assistant to the art director at an advertising agency. Amidst their artistic endeavors, Rita and John welcomed their first son, Anton, into the world. In 1963, they returned to the East Coast, settling in Marshfield, MA, where their family grew with the additions of Chris, Jason, and Alexis.

Rita's passions knew no bounds. Her green thumb transformed their Marshfield farmhouse into a sanctuary of vegetable gardens, fruit trees and splendid flower beds. Her expertise in horticulture was widely acknowledged, earning her accolades at the New England Spring Flower Show, where she proudly displayed her many blue ribbons. Rita's dedication to her craft saw her cultivate thousands of plants from seeds, all while raising her four beloved boys and supporting her husband, John, in their shared artistic and family pursuits.

Included in her horticultural endeavors, Rita lent her talents to the beautification of numerous commercial properties, including Zildjian Cymbal Co, the Registry of Motor Vehicles, South Shore Medical Center, and Realtron. Additionally, she developed lasting personal relationships with many of her individual clients throughout her life.  In 1978, Rita's expertise was recognized on a national scale when her photo and biography were featured in The Time-Life Encyclopedia of Gardening Under Lights, a testament to her passion and dedication to her craft.

Beyond her horticultural pursuits, Rita was renowned for her culinary skills, delighting friends and family with her delectable creations, especially her famed hermit and Christmas cookies. Her warmth, generosity, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her, especially her closest friends.

A true matriarch, Rita's legacy of love and creativity lives on in her devoted husband, John; her cherished sons, Anton, Chris, Jason, and Alexis; her six adored grandchildren; Ashley, Lauren, Julia, Nathan, Anna and Alexa.  Rita is also survived by loving siblings Anne Fucillo, Robert Crossman, Richard Crossman and dozens of additional and extended family members.  Rita touched countless lives with her ongoing grace and compassion.
