Robert Allen Bonner, 72, of Duxbury and Bonita Springs Florida, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 49 years (Caren O'Brien). He leaves his beloved children Robert Jr. (Colleen) of Scituate, Charlene of Kingston and Michael (Caroline) of Duxbury and his cherished Grandchildren Annie, Molly, Brigid, Brendan, Liam and Ben Bonner. He also leaves his sister Patricia Trapnell of Naples Florida, his brother John (Joan) of Scituate, his sister-in-law Molly (Steve) of Weymouth and his brother-in-law Dr. Edward O'Brien (Colette) of St. Louis Mo., along with many nieces and nephews.
Born in Quincy, Bob moved to Scituate during his sophomore year at Archbishop Williams High School. Upon graduation from St. Anselm College he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. After serving for four years he began his 30-year career at Sun Life Insurance Company while attending evening law school at Suffolk University. He ended his varied career as a member of the senior management team of Sun Life Financial.
The Bonner family moved to Duxbury in 1974 and Bob immediately became committed to serving the town. He coached in the town youth basketball and soccer programs, was appointed to the Board of Appeals, and served as Chairman of the Legislative Task Force. He eventually became chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the School Committee. He also was a founding director and a President of the Duxbury Education Foundation. Bob also served as President of the Holy Family Parish Council. For many years he was a member of the Board of Trustees for the South Shore Hospital Foundation.
In Bonita Springs, Bob was a volunteer for the Guardian Ad Litem Program representing abused and/ or neglected children. He was elected to the Board of Directors in his community of Spring Run, eventually serving as President for four years. He was elected President of the Brooks Commons Club Board. Bob derived great pleasure from meeting with the "coffee guys", golfing and being out on the bay in his boat, but his greatest happiness was the time spent with his Grandchildren and watching their sporting events. He was grateful for each day he was given and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
