Robert M. Shanley, 63, a longtime Marshfield resident, passed away December 9, 2022 after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was the cherished son of Dorothy (MacPherson) Shanley of Marshfield, and the late William F. Shanley, Sr.
A 1977 graduate of Marshfield High School, Robert attended Northeastern University. He worked many years as a Skilled Machine Operator for Biagini Inc., and the last 11 years as the Foreman for the Water Department, Town of Marshfield. While at the Town, he served first as union steward and then president, and was known as a strong advocate for his colleagues.
An extremely intelligent man, Robert was quick to laugh and often challenged his friends, co-workers, and family members on any number of conversation topics. He was well read and especially enjoyed Roman history and researching the bloodlines of Thoroughbred racehorses. Early mornings before work, he could be found parked along the Brant Rock seawall, drinking his coffee and reading the news. He loved his trips to the horse races in Saratoga Springs with Greg Keelan, and rarely, in over 30 years, missed a Sunday morning breakfast with his good friend Bob Clancy, his brother Michael and other friends.
Robert was one of five sons. He leaves his brothers William Jr. (Ann) of Marshfield and Sanibel, Florida, and Peter (Leslie), Edward, and Michael (Carolyn), all of Marshfield. He enjoyed and will be missed by his many nieces and nephews (who were all his favorites) Sean, Joe, Bill, Emily, Greg, Ian and Kristen Shanley, and Erin (Brendan) Harty, and his great niece Nell and great nephew Mac Harty.
Robert was formerly married to Beverly (Clifford) Shanley and lived many years in Kingston. He also leaves a daughter Tyler Kolvatz and his good friend Darrell Nobles.
Robert will be dearly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Marshfield Animal Shelter, by mail to P.O. Box 52, Marshfield MA 02050 or online at: https://friendsofmarshfieldanimalshelter.org/
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday morning, December 15, 2022 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude with a Funeral Service at Noon at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. Interment will be in the Winslow Cemetery.
