Obituary

Rosemary (Smith) Golden

June 25, 1941 – February 12, 2022

Rosemary Golden of Green Harbor (Marshfield) passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022, after a brief illness and surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her devoted children, Roland William "Bill" Golden III and Joanne Margaret Golden, their spouses, Donna Golden and Greg Pinto, and three grandchildren, Reilly, Maya, and Kai. She is also survived by her sister Sally Harrington and brothers John L Smith, Lawrence Smith, and Gerald Smith, all of Florida, and many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Roland William Golden, Jr, her parents William H Smith and Margaret M (Buckley) Smith, and her siblings, William K Smith, Richard Smith, Robert D Smith, Jeanne Paige, Elizabeth Caravano, Patricia L Smith, and James F Smith.

Rosemary was born in Boston, MA and raised in Brockton, MA. She graduated from Brockton High School, received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Stonehill College (1963), teacher's license for grades K-12, and her Master's in Education from Bridgewater State College (1987). She sold insurance for Mutual of Omaha for a time, but she was happiest as a teacher in the Marshfield public schools and surrounding towns, and as the managing director of the Huntington Learning Center in Hanover, MA, until her retirement. Rosemary volunteered for 10 years at Beth Israel Deaconess/Jordan Hospital in Plymouth post-retirement.

Rosemary was an avid traveler and lived in Europe with her husband and children for three years courtesy of the U.S. Army, and she passed on this wanderlust to her daughter, Joanne. She attended retreats and traveled to Eastern Europe with a group from Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham. Her morning routine included feeding the birds, prayers and meditation, and a cup of coffee. Her musical tastes ranged from big band, Motown, classical, rock, and musical theatre. She read everything from Shakespeare to detective novels and took pride in her home library. Rosemary attended drawing and pottery workshops, and she passed her drawing talent on to her son, Bill. She loved flowers of any kind and took pride in planting daffodils around Green Harbor with her neighbors. Her friends in Green Harbor are devastated, but have poured out stories of her wit, humor, kindness, generosity of spirit, her great memory for birthdays and personal details, and especially her ability to make everyone she met to feel loved and valued.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the incredible staff, Nurses and Doctors at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, and with s pecial appreciation to the palliative care team for their medical guidance and support during this difficult process.

Rosemary's wish was to be cremated and interred with her beloved husband, Roland, in Bourne National Cemetery on Cape Cod, after a private family service. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, online at https://www.cancer.org/ and the Marshfield Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1097, Marshfield MA 02050 or online at https://www.marshfieldfoodpantry.org/ in her memory
