Hingham - Ruth ("Angel") Joann Lane, age 90, of Hingham, formerly of Holbrook, died peacefully Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at the home of her daughter, Kimberly A. Lane, in Marshfield, surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was born in Boston on February 9, 1932 to the late Herman and Ruth (Thompson) Deschamps. She was raised in the Roxbury section of Boston in her earlier years; later moving to Jamaica Plain, and was a proud graduate of Jamaica Plain High School. She had lived in Hingham for forty-eight years, previously living in Holbrook for sixteen years. She was also a summer resident of the Fieldston section of Marshfield for sixty-four years.
Ruth was proud of her Boston roots, referring to herself even in recent times as a "city girl". By all accounts Ruth grew up poor . In her early days during the great depression she lived with her four siblings in cold water flats , apartments named as such due to their lack of any hot water. Ruth was the first to say though that she never felt poor, but rather saw herself as being fortunate to have family and to be a part of a great community in a time when they didn't even lock their doors in the city. Before being married Ruth worked at the Farraguts and Converse Factories in Boston.
While living in Roxbury as a child, Ruth was a Baptist Christian who was a member of the Ruggles Street Baptist Church walking three miles each way every Sunday to attend services. In her mid-twenties however she fulfilled a lifetime dream and converted to Catholicism. Her mentor and trainer at that time later went on to become a Bishop and they stayed close friends their whole lives. Ruth was passionate about her Roman Catholic Faith. She supported her local churches in both Holbrook, Hingham, and Marshfield. One of her favorite places of worship though remained the Mission Church in Boston. Ruth was a devoted pro-life Christian, who never minced words about her belief in saving the unborn. As with most of her firmly held beliefs, Ruth was always willing to share her views but she was also always patient and willing to listen to yours. Her heart and mind were open to all, no matter what your age, background, beliefs, or history. She enjoyed hearing the life-stories of others, and she enjoyed telling her own.
Ruth had a deep devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ and to Our Blessed Mother and went on several pilgrimages in her lifetime including to the Holy Land, and to sites of Mary's apparitions, including Fatima, Lourdes and Medjugorje. On these pilgrimages Ruth traveled with close companions, and often made new lifelong friends.
As an adult Ruth was an active citizen in her community and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at large. She worked diligently supporting various political candidates and causes she believed in, often marching at the State House to try to effect positive change. She likewise volunteered at her children's schools when they were young including Notre Dame Academy in Hingham and Boston College High School in Dorchester. She was always certain to be return in the afternoon though in order to be sure that her children never came home to an empty house.
Ruth Lane was extremely patriotic. She walked, talked, and breathed the Red, White and Blue. And she never tired of listening to Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America. Above-all though, Ruth was a devoted mother to her three children. She strongly encouraged them all to study and work hard, and to pursue and accomplish all their dreams. On some winter vacations she took them to Florida, and on others she brought them, and as many friends who would fit, on numerous ski trips up north. But the summers were for the Marshfield cottage, and her cottage was always open to friends, family, and well pretty much everyone else for that matter. More than once an extended family member or friend of her children would visit for a day but stay for much longer. It was a place always full of joy and laughter; and everyone loved the dip in the 3-foot pool after a day at the beach, and later feasting on her famous spaghetti dinners.
Beloved wife for fifty-eight years of the late Attorney Gerard F. Lane. Devoted mother of Tammy Quinlan and her late husband Michael of Quincy, Kimberly A. Lane of Marshfield, and Gerard F. Lane, Jr., Esq. and his wife Sonja of Marshfield. Loving grandmother (Mamé) of Michael, Nathan, and Joshua Quinlan, and of Jayden Lane. Dear sister of Herman (Teddy) Deschamps, June Eaton, Neal Deschamps, all late of Massachusetts, and of Isabell Cordell, late of Ohio, and step-daughter of Edward (Eddie) Nixon, late of Massachusetts. Ruth is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
