Obituary

Sally Helen (Gammons) Wheeler, 82, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025. She is survived by her beloved husband of over 58 years, Donald Graham Wheeler, Sr.

Sally was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Peter Talbot Gammons, Sr. and the late Helen (Pelley) Gammons.

A life-long learner and passionate educator, Sally was a teacher at the Eldredge Middle School in East Greenwich, RI, where she taught history and government to students in grades 6–8. After relocating to Connecticut, she continued her teaching journey at the Talcott School in West Hartford. Later, Sally transitioned from the classroom to work alongside her husband in the financial services industry, a partnership that spanned over 40 years.

A former Girl Scout, Sally enjoyed volunteering with Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. She loved traveling, especially to the Caribbean, where she and Donald fell in love with the water, beaches and culture while on their honeymoon. Even on vacation, Sally found ways to weave in learning, always seeking out historical sites and "teachable moments."

Above all, Sally cherished her role as a mother. She was a loving and devoted mom to Sharon Wheeler Sherman and husband Gary, Jennifer Lynn Bradley and husband Jeff, and Donald Graham "Chip" Wheeler, Jr. She was the proud grandmother to Sarah and Ryan Bradley, and Allison and Emma Sherman, with whom she continued to share her passion for learning.

Sally is also survived by her siblings Peter T. Gammons, Jr. (Linda), Robert W. Gammons (Meredith), and Nancy J. Hadfield (Robert); and was predeceased by her brother Allen B. Gammons (Ruth). She was a beloved sister-in-law to Judith L. Dillon and the late Francis R. Dillon. She will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 11:00AM at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, 404 Washington Street, Duxbury, MA.
