Stephen P.
McCauley

Marshfield
Sunday
MacDonald Funeral Home
1:00 - 4:00 pm (Eastern time)
Stephen Patrick McCauley passed away after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, deep love, and unforgettable memories. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Stephen grew up in Marshfield, where he graduated from Marshfield High School with the Class of 1966.
For 54 wonderful years, he was the devoted husband and partner to the love of his life, Debra (Kempton) McCauley. Together, they built a life centered around family, devotion, and shared joy. A staple of his local community, Stephen was widely known around town during his 23 years working at the local Shell Service Station. To Steve—or "Uncle Steve" to many—no one was a stranger, and he effortlessly turned brief chats with customers into genuine connections.
Stephen appreciated the simple, quiet routines that brought color and care to everyday life. In his retirement, Stephen moved to Connecticut and embraced a slower pace of life. He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, playing cribbage, and spending time with his brother and friends. Later in life, he discovered a talent for painting and spent hours tending to the yard. He was always happy to go to whatever craft fair or yard sale Debra brought him to, and he was known for his steady supply of corny jokes and easygoing humor.
Stephen was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Stephen McCauley; his parents, Helen (Maloney) McCauley and Arthur McCauley. As well as his sister, Gloria Dennis, brothers, John Dennis, Martin Peeler and nephew, Michael Garside. Along with cherished family members Marguerite McCauley Dailey and Martin McCauley.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra; his daughters, Deirdre McCauley (and her late partner, Neil Burns), Amanda Courchene (Brent), and Meghan Cambridge (Ian); and his grandchildren, Shaughnessy, Madeline, Sophia, Ian, Eamon, Ronan, and Sloane. He also leaves behind his adored brothers Arthur McCauley (Sydney) and Daniel McCauley. His sister-in-law Gail Garside and her daughter Erin (Ryan) and Marguerite DunLaney. As well as many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends who will forever treasure his warm humor, easygoing spirit, and steady presence.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all those who cared for Stephen at The Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven and the wonderful nurses at Hartford Health Care Hospice for the compassion and care they showed our family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers or formal condolences, we would love for you to share a favorite memory, a funny story, or a moment that makes you smile when you think of Steve. Those stories are the things that keep us connected and bring a little light to the sadness of saying goodbye.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2026 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. All are welcome to attend.
