Obituary

With tremendous sadness, we announce the passing of Susan Claire Thomson (Fenochietti), beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and mentor. Sue, aged 70, passed away on July 29, 2024 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Sue was born in Malden, MA on August 26, 1953, the daughter of Norma and Edward Fenochietti and the second of five children. She grew up in Marshfield, attending Marshfield High School and working as a waitress in the family restaurant, the Checkerboard. Sue credited this job with honing the management and people skills she would employ throughout her career.

In 1975, Sue met William (Bill) Thomson. They married two years later and went on to have two children, Jennifer and Bill Thomson Jr. While raising her children, Susan returned to college to receive her associate's degree in business administration from Bunker Hill Community College and her bachelor's in business administration, Management, and Finance from Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Management. She was valedictorian of both of her graduating classes.

Upon graduation, Sue worked as Executive Director for Philip W. Johnston and Associates, a healthcare and human services consulting firm. When Phil became the Chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, she joined him as Executive Director. Following her tenure with the Mass Dems, she spent ten years working for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, serving as Chief of Staff, Assistant Secretary of Policy and Program Development, Acting Secretary, and finally as Director of Health, Safety and Workforce. Sue eventually retired from the Secretary of State's Office in 2018 to take care of her parents, Norma and Edward. She cared for her parents for the remainder of their lives.

In addition to Sue's tireless work for the Democratic Party and the State of Massachusetts, she was also an active member of several local and national organizations: Malden Chapter 1 (Advisory Council), Portal to Hope (Advisory Committee), The Malden Human Rights Commission (Member), Zonta International (President, Area Four Director), The Junior Aid Association of Malden (Member), The Malden Government Center Commission (Chair), The Malden Democratic City Committee, The Massachusetts Democratic State Committee, and the Democratic National Committee. She was elected the first female president of the Massachusetts Electoral College.

Sue's legacy, like that of her mother Norma, is one of compassion, commitment, selfless action, and an enduring belief in the power of community and democratic values. She touched the lives of so many with her kindness, wisdom, and determination. Her passion and unwavering spirit inspired countless individuals to work toward a brighter future for all.

Sue was predeceased by her mother Norma Fenochietti, her father Edward Fenochietti, and her brother John Fenochietti. She is survived by her husband William C. Thomson, her son Bill Thomson Jr., her daughter Jennifer Thomson-Sullivan, and her brothers, Edward Fenochietti, Brian Fenochietti, and Neal Fenochietti. She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cherished friends and colleagues.
