Thomas J. Murray, Jr.'s Obituary

Tom Murray of Marshfield passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old.

Born in Dorchester on July 10, 1939, he was the son of Tom and Rita Murray, and brother to June Sponholtz (predeceased).

Tom is survived by Carol Murray, his beloved wife of 63 years and faithful caretaker, and his three children, Maureen Murray and her husband Paul Matsudaira, Christine Godino and her husband Paul Godino, and Tom Murray and his wife Kristen Murray. He was a larger-than-life, caring, and adoring grandfather to Michael Godino, Matty Godino, Hana Matsudaira, John Matsudaira, Elle Murray, Tommy Murray, and Grace Murray.

He loved his large extended Irish family, the Powells, and stayed very close to his sister’s children and their children.

Tom graduated from English High School where he was the captain of the basketball team. He served in the US Air Force, stationed in San Jose and Goose Bay, Labrador. He was especially proud of his degree from Boston College and held season tickets for BC football, basketball, and hockey for many years.

A popular accountant in Marshfield, Tom often used those talents for good, preparing financial aid applications for students in need. Midway through his career, he found his true vocation: teaching. He taught at Marshfield High School, Massasoit Community College, and in earlier years, Quincy Junior College. A beloved and truly memorable educator, he kept in touch with students for decades.

He was a friend of Bill W. and mentor to many.

Some of the greatest years of his life were spent coaching his son in little league and soccer. Highlights include bringing his team to the national indoor soccer finals and traveling around the East Coast for games.

His happiest days were spent hosting family parties in the backyard, planting his big vegetable garden while smoking a cigar, building Muppet stands for Michael, holding court at Sunday dinner, starting a household project, blending chocolate frappes for his grandchildren, driving around town with a grocery list of bargains, heading out in a big storm, meeting up with friends for Saturday morning breakfast, watching old movies, musicals, and every Boston sports team, and talking on the phone to friends and relatives from his recliner. Tom and Carol loved traveling together to New York City for Broadway shows and visiting the Matsudaira’s when they lived in Cambridge, UK, and Singapore.

As a couple, Tom and Carol were known to be welcoming, generous, and social. They cherished their life-long friendships. With their dearest friends, Arthur and Maureen O’Leary and Donny and Lorraine Gillis, they deeply enjoyed lunches at restaurants all over the South Shore, followed by tea and Irish bread at their home. Those get-togethers were “the best of times.” Tom always held the Simms boys close and insisted upon updates of their adventures. He also relied heavily on the most wonderful neighbors, Jimmy and Stacey Murphy, who were true blue right up until the end.

Mostly, Tom will be remembered for his booming voice, his love of a good laugh, his big heart, his signature phrases, and his well-worn stories.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christine Parish Church, 1295 Main Street in Marshfield. Interment will be at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
