Thurman Lee Smith, Sr. known to friends as "Smitty," left this earth early in the morning on Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Born in Kinston, NC, to Clifton Smith, a tobacco sharecropper and Daisy Whitfield, Smitty was raised on a farm, learning agriculture on the family farm. Upon graduation, Smitty moved from the south during the height of the civil rights movement in search of opportunity and more freedom from oppression. With a suitcase full of dreams, he moved to Boston where he soon met and married Jean Thomas.

Smitty and Jean moved to Duxbury, MA in 1965 where they built a family and a home for over 57 years as a car salesman. During his career, Smitty won numerous sales awards and took great pride in the business relations he had with his customers as Smitty used to say:

"I am not selling a car to this man, I want to sell this man 5 cars."

Smitty was active in his community and was a member of the Duxbury Jaycees. Further, he was a proud Masonic brother, he rose to the highest level of the 33rd degree, an honorary degree bestowed for meritorious service to craft masonry.

Smitty spent much of his leisure time enjoying his family and fishing the tides on Duxbury beach, with well-earned bragging rights- he once caught a 55 lb. sea bass on Duxbury Bridge. Smitty is survived by his wife of 55 years, (Amour Jean), his son (Thurman Jr.), his two daughters (Lisa and Susan), a son in law (Greg), one surviving aunt, Mae Helen, of District of Columbia, 2 sisters in law (Evelyn and Annie), 2 brothers in law (Albert and Eddie) and 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, September 24, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service at 6:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Rte. 139) in Marshfield.
