It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Virgilio Pedro Fonseca (1936 – 2024). He was many things to many people, but he was proudest of being the beloved husband to his wife Eunice, father to his children; Euvir, Virgilio Jr (Djila), and Zeller, and being the grandfather of Dahlia and Gavin.
He grew up on the island of Fogo, Cabo Verde where at an early age his penchant for helping others began. He would serve as a teaching assistant for his father, Pedro (Neco) while still a student himself. Later, he became a merchant in Cova Figueira, traveling between the islands as his business grew. Throughout these mini voyages and discussions with others he began to hear about the land of opportunity that was America. At still a young age, he decided it was time to set sail for America.
In 1965, he arrived in New Bedford, MA, carrying little more than determination and a backpack. He took on many jobs, sometimes working 18-hour days, so he could save money and start building his new life in America. During the next several years he would provide support for his relatives back in Cabo Verde and in 1972 he would marry Eunice Veiga and start his family in Scituate, MA.
Virgilio was a deeply religious man and helped to curate the Cape Verdean community's Catholic masses in the town of Scituate. This culminated in hosting the celebration of Santa Catarina in the mid-90s in what has become an annual tradition for the Cape Verdean community.
Virgilio's kindness, pride in his heritage, and ability to inspire success in others left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His endless stories brought people together, and his wisdom enriched countless lives. He appreciated conversations about politics, watching the Montreal Canadiens, playing poker and taking his daily walks.
Virgilio Pedro Fonseca's legacy of love, resilience, and generosity will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. It's been said that pain is the price we pay for love. This unimaginable pain embodies all of the love, lessons, and wisdom that he shared during his lifetime.
