Virginia (Cobb) Cunning of Hanover, formerly of Marshfield, passed away on December 24, 2020 at the age of 88. Beloved wife of the late Frank Cunning; loving mother of Linda Allen and husband Mark of Norwell, Frank J. Cunning, Jr., of Scituate, Michael Cunning and Sandy Scott of Duxbury, Sharon Perfetti and husband Christopher of Humarock, Brian Cunning and Fatma Kurtoglu of Mashpee; cherished grandmother of Sarah, Michael, Jacqueline, Zachary, Thomas, Caroline, and great-grandchildren Talon and Emmett. Virginia also leaves her sisters, Kathy Hoss, Julie Fontaine, and Betty Cheney. She is predeceased by siblings Patricia Bohn, Jackie Cobb, and George Cobb, Jr.
Gini was born in West Roxbury where she lived with her father and mother, George and Julia, and her six siblings. Her family summered in Green Harbor, where they moved full-time when Gini was a junior in high school. Gini was known for her beauty – both inside and out – and won the title of 'Strawberry Queen' as well as the heart of her soon-to-be husband, Frank. The two went on to graduate from Marshfield High School in 1950.
After graduation, Gini attended Framingham State Teachers College to study elementary education. She left college early when Frank proposed and invited her to join him overseas where he was stationed in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Gini and Frank were married on August 29, 1953 at the Church of the Assumption in Green Harbor, Marshfield. The two embarked to Prestwick, Scotland on the USS United States, where they enjoyed a brief honeymoon before Frank returned to active duty. They lived in Scotland until 1954, when they came home to welcome their first child. Gini and Frank moved to Marshfield Hills in 1955, where they built a house and went on to raise five children.
Gini was kind, compassionate, and hard-working. She waitressed at Howard Johnson's, which later became PJ's Country House, in Scituate for 47 years. She was known by her customers for her beautiful smile and piercing blue eyes, as well as her attentiveness and customer service. Despite working nights to support her family, she spent as much time as possible with her children. She volunteered in her children's classrooms at Eames Way Elementary School and was the Den Mother to her sons' Cub Scout troops. Gini was happiest when she was surrounded by family and hosting holidays and dinner parties brought her immense joy. In her spare time, she also enjoyed painting and caring for her vast collection of house plants.
Gini and Frank were known as "Gigi" and "Grampy Frank" to their six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Gigi focused on keeping up with her grandchildren and learned to text, Facetime, and play Words with Friends. She also loved playing UNO, Friday pizza nights with Merlot and a glass of ice (on the side), and outings with her family.
Gini and Frank retired and moved to New Bern, NC in 2003 where they built a beautiful home on a golf course. They enjoyed the warmer southern weather and spending time with many great neighbors. They lived in this home until 2017, when they returned to Hanover, MA to be near their family. Gini was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She put a smile on the face of everyone she met and her memory will last forever.
