IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Virginia "Ginny"
Ernestine Chandler
August 8, 2018
Virginia Ernestine "Ginny" Chandler, the second eldest resident of Marshfield, died on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at her home, since 1940, on Sinnotts Lane. She was 101 years, 4 months and 20 days old.
As the inevitable effects of aging accumulated during the past several years, Ginny was lovingly attended to by those who had lived with, and been cared for, by her, including her grandnephew Edmond Matthew "Matt" Sinnott, her great-grandnephew Edmond Matthew "Eddie" Sinnott, his wife Anne Marie (Bradford) Sinnott and his mother Denise (LaChimia) (Sinnott) (Garnett) Alexander. Her caregivers Carol, Marissa and Kristin from Bayada Home Health Care were almost like family. Her grandniece Mary Walker (Sinnott) Barry and great-grandniece Diana (Barry) (DePersia) Devine were very instrumental in fulfilling her desire to age gracefully, and die peacefully, at home. The family is thankful that Mary, Matt and Diana were with her until the very end.
She was born on March 19, 1917, at the Chandler homestead on St. George Street, in Duxbury, to John Alden and Susan Irene (Delano) Chandler. Her mother died in 1920 leaving her to be raised in the families of her eldest siblings, George Dewey and Susan Durant (Chandler) Beals, Ernest Alden and Elizabeth Melville (Sinnott) Chandler, William James and Muriel Winnifred (Chandler) Murphy, Winthrop Bernard and Adele Elvira (Walker) Chandler and Charles Linwood and Mary Elizabeth (Chandler) Sinnott, all who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by sister Ava Natalie Chandler, who died young and brother Frank Delano Chandler, who didn't marry until Ginny was in her teens.
While her siblings acted as parents her 16 nieces and nephews, most of whom predeceased her, took on the role of siblings. They included George Chandler Beals, Bruce Beals; Winthrop Allen Murphy, William Delano Murphy, Patricia Marie (Murphy) (McIntire) Hunter, James Martin Murphy, Virginia Irene (Murphy) Bowers, Winthrop Bernard Chandler, Jr., Robert Sherwin Chandler, Natalie Irene (Sinnott) Mack, Edmund Linwood Sinnott and Chandler Sinnott. Surviving nieces and nephews are Jean Elizabeth (Chandler) Woodbury of Stuart, Fla., Ernest Alden Chandler, Jr., Jon Lewis Chandler and Mary Walker (Sinnott) Barry, all of Marshfield.
Ginny was a clerk/typist for the C. C. Langille and W. G. Ford insurance agencies before joining the Marshfield D.P.W. Water Division as a clerk in 1955. After retiring in 1976 she maintained her friendships with co-workers, most especially the late Edith M. "Edie" (Cronin) Ford. Grandniece Donna Lee "Chickie" Beals was very proud to have followed in Ginny's footsteps in the Water Division, although "not until years later".
Ginny loved to travel, primarily to visit relatives, and dedicated much of her life to maintaining warm relationships with family, extended family and friends via cards, notes, letters and telephone calls. She never became involved with social media but she would most assuredly have had thousands of friends and followers. She was especially close to her cousin Bertha Elizabeth (Chubbuck) Applegate and her daughter Elizabeth (Applegate) Heaney whose family she enjoyed visiting in Washington, D.C. She was a faithful Christian and shared her love of the Lord in word and deed. At the time of her passing she had no fewer than 100 individuals on her prayer list.
She was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society, The Alden Kindred of America and she joined the First Congregational Church of Marshfield in the 1940s and became the eldest member upon the passing of Wilfred "Biff" Henderson in 2011. She gave selflessly of her time and talents and always brought cheer and comfort to those in her presence.
Ginny was blessed to have 43 grandnieces and grandnephews, 64 great-grandnieces and grandnephews, 59 great-great grandnieces and grandnephews and 5 great-great-great grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at a memorial service, officiated by Rev. Joel K. Boyd, on Sunday, August 26 at 2:00 p.m. at The First Congregational Church of Marshfield, 1994 Ocean Street, followed by a collation in the Parish Hall at 1981 Ocean Street.
