Virginia M. (Lanigan) O'Melia, most recently of Marshfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on the morning of January 24, 2020 at the age of 95. Ginny was born on July 15, 1924 in Cambridge, MA to the late John and Mary (Duffy) Lanigan and was raised in Arlington, MA by her loving grandmother and aunts. Ginny was a graduate and class valedictorian of St. John's Parish High School in North Cambridge, MA.
Ginny was the beloved wife of the late William M. O'Melia. Before Bill's passing, Ginny and her groom celebrated a very special 70 years of marriage. They raised their family in Braintree and also enjoyed their vacation home in Bridgton, ME. Ginny is survived by her four children, Catherine McPeck and her husband, Fred, of Bridgewater; Robert O'Melia of Taos, New Mexico; Jean Crabbe and her husband, Claude, of Marshfield; and Janet Barton and her husband, John, of Hailey, Idaho. Ginny is known as Nana and is survived by five grandchildren (Brian, Matthew, Chelsey, Abigail, and Heidi) and three great-grandchildren (Juliet, Grant, and Loulou). Ginny also leaves behind her devoted caregiver, Diane Darcy of Weymouth and a number of nieces, nephews, and their families.
Ginny and Bill took many trips together throughout their lifetime. Ginny especially loved traveling to Hawaii and Alaska, but one of her favorite places was Bridgton where her family enjoyed spending summers on the lake and skiing in the winter. Ginny also treasured her time spent in her younger years enjoying the summers in Onset, MA with her family and of course, Bill. Ginny will be remembered for her quick wit, her love of music and dancing, and the enjoyment she received from making cookies and treats for her family and friends.
Ginny spent the last year of her life at The Village at Proprietor's Green in Marshfield, MA immersed in a loving senior community that truly cares about its residents and their families. She enjoyed going to lunch with her friends, ballroom dancing, and attending the music and entertainment programs. Ginny's family cherishes the time that their mom and grandmother was a part of this very special community.
Ginny will be celebrated at the church where she had so many fond memories growing up. Ginny's Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 2254 Massachusetts Avenue, North Cambridge, MA 02140. Burial will immediately follow at the Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to honor Ginny's life can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Always remember…"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear."
