Walter "Wally" D. Cotter of Marshfield, formerly of Neponset, passed away on March 1, 2021 at the age of 68. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Norton) Cotter, formerly of Neponset; loving father of Thomas Cotter and his wife Kerry of Rockland, Patrice Cotter of Weymouth, and Cherilyn Paradis and her husband Michael of Marshfield; and cherished grandfather of Michael, Molly, Ellen, Jack, Mason, Jace, and Caden. Predeceased by his father, Joseph P. Cotter, Walter leaves his loving mother, Irene (Rydell) Cotter Seiders and his siblings Joseph Cotter, John Cotter, and Catherine Showalter.
Wally was born on Feb 24th, 1953 in Neponset (St. Ann Parish) section of Dorchester. Growing up he enjoyed playing baseball, football, and shooting pool down the bowling alleys. After graduating from Boston Tech he enlisted in the U.S Navy, soon volunteering to go to Vietnam. During his tour of duty, he was injured and then honorably discharged as a disabled veteran. Soon after returning home from war he proposed and married the love of his life Patty in 1974 and was employed by the U.S postal service. Two years later they started a family, eventually having 3 children whom he loved greatly. In 1986 he, along with a few other Vietnam Veterans, began the fundraising campaign for the construction of the Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial Monument on Morrissey Blvd. From beginning to end he was an integral part of the monument's successful completion. He enjoyed road trips with his wife and kids then beach and mountain getaways as he grew older. Later in life, with his health declining, he spent more time at home with family. He was a devoted family man and patriot. As his illness grew, so did his faith in God.
