Walter J. Szulak, 89, of Marshfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 26, 2025 at Winchester Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Ann (Kay) Szulak.
Walter attended Boston public schools. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. Following his military service, he served shortly with the merchant marines, which ended when he met the love of his life Ann. He worked for Columbia Packing Co. in Boston as a shipper and following that, worked for General Dynamics in Quincy. He ultimately retired with CWB Asphalt and Concrete Testing.
Walter met Ann and they married on December 22, 1957. They started raising a family in South Boston before moving to Marshfield. Together, Walter and Ann raised six children and eventually found their own little piece of heaven in the town of Marshfield, along a river and a long driveway.
Walter loved his home and enjoyed spending time taking care of it. Whether it was fixing something, chopping wood, gardening, or landscaping. His greatest joy was having his family there, especially for the holidays. Christmas Eve was one of the biggest events, where everyone in the family gathered, and he loved it.
Walter loved to travel, whether it was with his wife Ann or taking his entire family on a cruise. Family was important to Walter and he built such a strong bond. Known to all of his family as "PAPA", he was a tough and rugged guy but with his grandchildren, deep down, he had a soft heart for all of them. Sitting in his famous recliner during the holiday events and watching his grandchildren was his greatest enjoyment.
Walter also loved sports, basketball, hockey, baseball, and football. He always had a game on in the house and was secretly known to place a bet or two. When his grandchildren came to visit he loved talking to them about sports and their involvement. He also loved a good movie here and then. Walter would always "make the rounds" with his wife Ann to his children's homes on holidays and would always try to attend a sporting event to watch his grandchildren. Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his loving wife Ann of 68 years, Walter is survived by six children, Mark Szulak of Marshfield, Susan MacDonald and husband Steven of Marshfield, Eric Szulak and wife Jane of Duxbury, Walter Szulak and wife Stacey of Middleboro, Joyce McCarthy and husband Stephen of Marshfield, Ann Lillis and husband Mark of Marshfield, eleven grandchildren, Adam, Jason, Kevin, Kerri, Jacob, Lucas, Kelsey, Madison, Molly, Patrick, Catie, five great grandchildren, Fiona, Kylee, Quincee, Brooks, Lily, and two more on the way.
