On November 13, after a week spent exactly the way he liked it—taking care of business, attending a capital budget meeting, stopping by the Legion, Elks, and Yacht Club, watching the Patriots surrounded by his family and friends —William Francis Last Sr. (Billy) of Marshfield had his Final Final on earth. He headed straight to heaven to reunite with family and friends for his eternal happy hour.
Billy was born in Dorchester on July 12, 1947, the only child of William and Marguerite (Peg) Last. It was there—between Saint Brendan's Parish, serving as an altar boy, and lively gatherings with his McMahon/Dunton cousins in their triple-decker on Crockett Ave.—that he learned the three principles that shaped his entire life: Faith, Family, and Friends.
Billy's family began summering in Marshfield in 1949, and in 1963 he moved to Marshfield full-time. By age 14, he was working at the Rexicana Ballroom, quickly mastering the art of spinning records, keeping the party moving, and charming everyone in the room—a skill he carried with him for the rest of his life.
Billy spent his life building community —sometimes with lumber and blueprints, but more often, with a desire to make Marshfield a better place for his family and friends. He poured his heart into the town, always believing that strong communities were built on a handshake and conversation (usually over coffee and sambuca). He was especially proud of his involvement with Sowing Seeds and his long service on the Capital Budget Committee, a role he approached with seriousness of a man guarding the town's future. Billy had a strong faith in God. He shared it generously - teaching CCD at all 3 churches because one just wasn't enough for him.
Throughout his life, Billy owned and operated Country Shore Homes, Sundance Homes, Marshfield Liquors, V Penny Pub, Sweetser's, Cohasset Central Market, Fairgrounds Restaurant, Camp Daniel Webster, The Lobster Tale, and The Tavern in addition to helping build the Library, the Boys and Girls Club, new subdivisions, Elderly Housing and a package store. He called all of these "essential services." No matter what the venture, he created spaces where everyone knew your name, your children, and a bit of your story.
Billy had a remarkable gift for bringing people together—mostly because he seemed to belong to every club between Marshfield and Lincoln, NH. He started with Kiwanis in 1974, then collected memberships the way some people collect coins: The Elks, the Green Harbor Yacht Club, the Legions in both Duxbury and Lincoln, the Board of Directors for the Marshfield Fair, and of course, his true home away from home, the Penguin Ski Club. If there was a meeting, a gathering, or a chance to play a game of cribbage, Billy had a membership card for it.
While Billy built many homes, businesses, and gathering places, his biggest project—and proudest accomplishment—was building his own family. He raised six children and delighted in his 16 grandchildren, passing down his work ethic, his strong faith in God, his love of Marshfield and his unwavering belief in putting family first. Family dinners, holiday traditions, cider parties, tree-cutting tailgate parties and the countless nicknames he lovingly gave were all part of how he kept his family close and connected.
In addition to his cherished friends, cousins, brother and sisters in law, nieces and nephews, Billy leaves behind his devoted wife Barbara Last, his children Kimberly Bouressa (Michael) Stacey Reisman, Laurie McCuen (Timothy) Karen Deane, William Last Jr (Jennifer) and Michael Last (Colby) and his cherished 16 grandchildren: Brendan, Kerrin, Connor and Brian Bouressa, Samuel and Jacob Reisman, Courtney and Cameryn Grissman, Liam, Sophia, and Connor Deane, Mary, Annabel, William and Molly Last, and Sadie Last.
